Is it ok to burn some leaded AvGas in my '00 Kawasaki KLR 650 motorcycle?
It doesn't have a Catalytic converter on it or O2 sensor? it's got carbs, so maybe no O2 sensor?

A friend screwed up his truck doing that
I have about 7 gallons of 50% AvGas in the trike.
I'm going to fly it down to about 3 gallons, then drain it
then change the oil and I don't want AvGas in with the fresh engine oil

    Lawnmower? 2 Stroke Chainsaw?

Just too any cool posts here this am-- @Ttabs (Neat vid) , @Sajan (cool engine & Oz happiness), @MontyStone (great story), @ Yarraft (nice last flights!!). This site really reads like a Trikers Magazine-- News, stories and friendly comments about All things Triking from around the world. Way too cool!

Don't forget to post a photo of you on New Years Day in the album (link below) for the 2nd Annual World Wide Virtual First Flight 2014 Fly-In !!!!

the fuel problem was caused by that nasty little 'ohshit' spring clip falling off, probably allowing the needle to jam against the float arms causing the mixture on that cylinder to change ,not sure rich or lean, easy fix, though the arms are showing a lot of wear at the contact with needle area. have flown it twice since then, runs like a 503 now! regarding meeting, i'm always pleased to meet fellow trikers, you'd be dissapointed, i just look like any other 79yr old triker! monty

  • Monty

thanks boss for squeezing my vid into alltrikes. yeah the vid of my 503 engine out is in the ' other' trike thingy, how can i slide it over to alltrikes? i've been nursing a pair of 'new' bionic knee joints, makes it difficult to egress my trike, they won't straighten nor bend (much) but i'm getting a bit more aviating in now. thanks again, monty

Beautiful day to fly today. flew for 3:54 & went all over the place. Oceano, Morro Bay, San Simeon/Hearst Castle, Paso Robles, then down to California Valley/Chorizzo Plains/soda Lake and back home. Flew with a girl who had multiple Airgasms ;) Said she was in a state of "bliss" the whole time. It was actually the state of California, but I didn't want to spoil her dream ;) Lots of fun! I told her we were going to Oz in April, she said she wants to go along ...

  • XC Triker

Funny you should ask. I want to do a night flight over Bioluminescence on the beach. Ken mentioned Osh Kosh (but then said maybe next year) Camping in Utah under the wing. Redo Catalina with the girls. Tom is coming up with one last big trip in Idaho (Luis & Carke trail?) and fly-in Polson (near glacier). & I still want those Oysters in Arcata. Those are just the non-secret ones ;) And then there's Oz April 2014!!!

  • madmik

Always better to have empirical support to assumptions XC. A good year's flying. What are next year's flying goals (other than Mega in Oz)?

  • XC Triker

Calculated my fuel use for 2013: Average 3.06 GPH over the 400 gallons that I recorded use. Flying Tanarg BioniX 15M 80HP typically at 5000 RPM. I started keeping track so that I could plan long XC flights better on my average (I usually use 3.5 to 4 GPH as a conservative figure), but now I'm also looking to see if there are changes in fuel use that may indicate engine wear.

Waiting in Oakland FSDO office, hoping they like the Night paperwork I presented to them today (it's a long drive from my house- we got up at 04:30 to get here). Fingers crossed ...

    Thanks @Mattskyflyer (MGL) , @ CraigV & all.

  • XC Triker

Well, nothing ventured, nothing gained ... Decided to abort part way due to a confluence of factors. Sometimes, you just have to say, it doesn't look like today is the day ... maybe tomorrow...

  • Ken

Looks cool- hope you're taking pictures and video! Fly safe

  • XC Triker

I'm going to see if I can complete this flight today. Don't believe it's been done before in a trike even though it's right in our backyard. You've seen many movies from Henry along the coast on the mainland there.
Requires a 15 mile open ocean crossing, less than the one we did to Catalina- but no public airport out in the islands, and lots of military airspace. Janet's trusting me to make it right. Doing final calcs / prep now. T/o ~ 90 min

  • XC Triker

It's a go!! I'll be taking off to cross LAX airspace in about 2 hours. Fingers crossed weather holds out for tonight

  • white eagle

Well hell thats even better and youed be warm the whole way. Seriously though iam sure you disapointed .the fall in montana provides just awesome smooth allday air most of the time.best time to be flying.evenin wnter if storms arnt present the air remains glassy smooth.

  • XC Triker

It's a "Santa Ana" wind. A hot strong wind in LA from the EAST! I'd get blown to Hawaii not Florida !! ;) Ken said Vegas was howling too (that's where our heat comes from in these conditions).

  • white eagle

I dont understand xc why you just dont get you sand storm rating at the same time. If it gets too bad just head down wind enjoy free vacation in florida.

  • XC Triker

Thanks Dave, yeah, Jim called me up to say "Don't come down to LA, it's crazy! Sand blowin in my eyes!" We're lookin at Monday or Tuesday now.

  • Dave G

That sucks buddy, I know that you were psyched and ready.......do you have another tentative date set?

  • XC Triker

Santa Ana winds up to 40kts :( No flying. Test postponed.

Important news from our idiotic US government:

    From FAA.gov email today:

    Effect of Possible Government Shutdown
    Notice Number: NOTC4990

We wish to bring to your attention that National events may have an impact on FAASTeam events, seminars and services. This may include postponement or cancellation of safety events/seminars in your area with little or no advance notice.

For those of you who are FAASTeam Representatives, there may also be an impact on pending SPANS events, Notices, and FAASTeam Directory Applications. In the event of a government shutdown, there may be delayed response to requests that are submitted (or still pending) on or after October 1, 2013.

We ask for your patience during this time. Thanks again for all you do to help reduce the aviation accident rate in the General Aviation community.

Hi, we had a great time this weekend at el mirage. Mellow people, some intense flying, lots of fun. Frugal Flyer came all the way down from Northern Calif (@explorer3333) we rescued him on his walk across the desert. Too many people to mention them all, but really wanted to thank everyone for a great time. I was reviewing some video I took, I'll try and post the video (I swear). Ken's new trike ran great. Lots of stories, I want to tell it all, but it would take 72 hours. ;) Sally took a bunch of photos on our flight up to Big Bear (~7000 feet) and predicted to be -3° Celsius when we landed, but nobody got the pictures of the entire FlaBob crowd lining the Taxiway to see the Hang Gliders take off. I mean it was weird, I didn't notice till halfway down the taxiway-- Nobody's around the display planes!!! All of them are out on the flight line watching, waving and taking pictures!!!! I thought, oh, one of us (probably Sally with the big camera) is getting this .... Oh, well. Very cool. Neat airport. It's home to EAA chapter #1 !!! We swooped down out of Big Bear to get there, dodging around a bunch of LA airspace. More later... gotta get some rest.

  • XC Triker

I posted MegaFauna 2014 in the Events section visible to logged in members only

  • XC Triker

Thank you very much guys!! LA night training was delayed until next week now. Kinda good, as I was really rushing to get everything done for that AND El Mirage and it was windier than snot today (however windy that is ;). I'll keep you posted though. I'm obviously required to make the flight plan and I'm finding that we will be within glide most of the way (3 hours out & back) which is why flying over LA at night (@knussear) is actually semi-safer (more airports, more lights) than potentially flying over pitch black wilderness.

  • Ken

Wow XC - sounds like a crazy choice of cities for your first one. Stay vigilant, you will be awesome!
