      In AUSTRALIA  (MegaFauna 2014, etc)

ALL  (get's a little crowded in this view)

Thanks Eugene-- I thought I recognized it-- it's here: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=salton+sea&hl=en&ll=33.329972,-115.946445&spn=0.012102,0.015256&geocode=+&hnear=Salton+Sea&t=h&z=16
and, it is much nicer there
How is the hotel itself? There are some dives there

  • Eugene

The El Mirage guys are going to be at Ray & Carols Motel By the Sea. Take HWY 86 south to North Marina Dr it loops around and turns into South Marina Dr and goes back out to HWY 86. On the North east end of the loop there is a street Sea Garden Ave follow it to Ray and Carols. There is a cleared area on the north side of the RV park That is the LZ. There is a restuarant and hot shower electrical water hookups. The paratoys site has nothing.

Hii XC!! We sure miss you kids and wish we were able to attend this last weekend in Havasu. Next time for sure!! ~♥~

  • XC Triker

Hey Guys & Gals, I'm bummed that I haven't been able to contribute more lately- been getting work caught up and at hangar getting ready for flight to Havasu, reprogramming my Enigma etc. But definitely enjoying all the cool stuff, beautiful photos, the birth of a new trike, AND electric trikes!!! Hope to be contributing some photos and stories of the trip to Havasu & seeing many of you!
This is my planned route-- about 375 miles each way:

Also, EAA had interesting article in weighing homebuilts.

Here is an example of cart scales. Though these are new you can often pick up used ones. Note, they do not interconnect, so the calculations you do yourself.

  • XC Triker

I don't trust bathroom scales-- at $20 each, I could afford to have a set of 3. I haven't looked recently for better scales used on eBay, but I do recall I'd prefer to split the cost

  • Jake

Are these going to be bathroom scales or something else?

It seems like bathroom scales should be sturdy enough to weigh our trikes - my dry weight is less than 600 lbs, standard bathroom scales usually go up to 300 lbs, and at least some weight has to be on the front wheel. "Heavy Duty" scales go up to 400+ lbs and are still $25 at Walmart...

  • XC Triker

Trike Scales: Anyone in the California/Nevada/etc area want to go in on a shared set of scales to weigh our trikes? Peter says we can probably get a used set from some of the go-cart racers on ebay.

Oh yeah Riz, you liked her so much you posted her twice!!

  • RizzyWizzy

Next Christmas wish is that Christmas Angel ....remember her? LOL

  • XC Triker

You are welcome Riz! Enjoy. Be careful what you joke about ;)

  • RizzyWizzy

XC triker, thanks for your gift of the mitts, I was joking about my Christmas wish but I guess there is such a thing as Santa. The Mitts had place for the map so now I will "have" to do cross countries. LOL. No more just flying around La Grande.

  • XC Triker

Yes, it is Ken. I had met him before, he was well known and respected at SMX:

    ======
The Friends of Oceano Airport are helping to organize a celebration of life for our dear friend Glen Ray who was killed yesterday in an airplane crash. The celebration will be Sunday, January 13th beginning at noon at ArtCraft Paint in Santa Maria [KSMX]. All are welcome. Please help us spread the word. Central Coast Smokers will be providing a tri-tip lunch. Pilots from SMX and LPC will be participating in a flight formation.

We are all still in shock and our thoughts and prayers are with his son, brother and sister.

  • Ken

Hey David, sorry to hear about this! What a horrible tragedy.
    Did you know the pilot?

  • XC Triker

I may need all of your help... As you may know, Oceano is the last airport of it's kind on/near the beach in California. A beautiful & treasured airport to fly into / from, but a dying breed. There is a local developer (a well known snake) who has been agitating for Oceano's closure-- so that he can build condos there (just downwind of the sewage plant, when there is millions of acres of farmland around). He will no doubt use this incident to state that the airport is a safety risk to the community. When in fact, it is a safety net for the community-- life flight from our small community to major hospitals like LA & SF come from here, organs for our local patients are flown in and out, the coast guard, CHP, Police, Sheriff & Search & Rescue all use it. If the airport were to be reomved, not only would these services & emergency aid no longer be able there, but it would leave no place for aircraft in distress to land safely-- that would be worse. We do not remove our freeway because 1 accident happened-- in fact, 100's occur in this section alone annually. This pilot did all he could to avoid bystanders and piloted it to the ground without injuring any one else. Showing professionalism to the last. I may request that all of us band together to write into the local news chat boards with supportive messages regarding GA, to overwhelm the public opinion that the snake will try and swing. Thank you and my condolences!

  • XC Triker

    Hello All,
Thank you for the info and concern. I was at work when this occurred. I have since found out that unfortunately it was a single fatality crash of a GA Luscombe (I believe). A well known & loved local. More ...

  • Jozinko

This is a bad info in a new year...

  • YFT

XC Triker, I don't think its a Trike. Check this http://www.ksby.com/news/single-engine-plane-crash-on-oceano-dunes/

  • XC Triker

Jerry just called me to say he received EMS reports of aircraft down in the Oceano dunes. Evolving now. I called a few people for info... standing by. I can say it wasn't us trikers (not the known ones like Me, Henry, James, etc). There is a 103 trike stored outside 24/7 in the salt air and sun there I worry about, but I highly doubt it was him.

My radio is a Uniden UBC355XLT... nice and cheap and easy for the job.

  • crayonbox

You have to contact Dave at LiveATC and he will set you up.
As for photos - nothing to see except a radio with external antenna connected into the Line audio input of the computer. Dave will supply the software and access codes so that your data is piped to his server for internet delivery. http://www.liveatc.net/ct/contact.php

  • XC Triker

That's cool, can you show us here how to do that? (a page w a couple photos, the software link?) Then it will be saved for posterity forever here ;) And I'd like to give it a try-- and I bet George, Ken & Henry would too ;)

  • crayonbox

    Hi XC Triker,
Regarding the CTAF radio on ATCLive, I sent an email via the link on their page to say I will volunteer to connect the local CTAF online for them, and they sent me instructions and software. I bought a Uniden scanner, connected it to my computer (which is always onilne), set up the software and voila! Brought to you by me.
