Scary ultralight engine out

By jeff trike Comments (8)

This is another scary ultralight engine out.
It starts getting scary at 3:30. No place to land over a lake.

The area the pilot is flying from looks to me like it is to dangerous. But I don't know the area. From the footage I can see there is no way out if the engine goes US. So I would say the pilot didn't plan to fail, he just failed to plan. Thanks Jeff. I don't like seeing these accidents but it does make us more aware.

That is a good one Jeff, you have to hand it to the pilots that make mistakes and have the maturity & kindness to share what they learned from their mistake so that others might not have to.  It really happened fast from that altitude-- very scary situation, went from beautiful to death traps everywhere.

Translation for YFT Oz speak   "US" = Unserviceable.    (I had to ask him ...)

They have their language all upside down.  ;)

Jeff, Please let us know what caused the engine failure when you find out.....I believe this is a Rotax 912s correct?

Oh yeah Jeff & WhiteE, that's a good one!!!  Almost a year ago.  He's at 600' (which as you see is LOW and gives him only seconds to react)  He says, of the flight at that altitude, "I've done it many times without any problems ..."  Scarey place to be though, wow!!!

I think he was pulling back on stick a little too much (out of nerves- he'd barely floated over the first two sets of wires, then he's actually too high in that transfer station) on that final turn at about 4ft altitude and actually stalled / spun to land.  What do you think?  I think he should've dove some after that last set of wires.

    Good job though!

He's very lucky, while others weren't so fortunate.  This one scared me.   I rather fly over where I can see land in emergency.

Certainly brings it home, doesnt it.......

I think, this guy will celebrate his next birthday... I would've chosen the way on his right side.  Fortunately I was not on his place.  As Sally wrote, higher is safer.  You have much more time to decide. He wasn't high, ... But he  had a lot of luck.  Every obstacle he had in his flight was luckily overcome... Crossing the high voltage wires, next the narrow brook, trees all around, more electric wires and as a miracle a gap between trees... God loves you very much! Fortunately :)

Great Vid, watched it again !!! Noticed this time that he said (which so many people say), "...Beautiful day ... No idea what was to come ... I've done it many times ... and never had any problems (before) "

Engine began failing at 4:24 and from 600 - 900 feet, he was crashing into the ground less than 1 minute 10 seconds later (including slo-mo time)!!!

As YFT said, he failed to plan.
