Hi YFT or perhaps i should call you BBG (Big Bad Grandad). Ive always been curious about how one would go about bending the battens back into shape........not that mine need any attention yet, but seeing as how we have someone in the fold that has actually done it, I thought that I'd ask.

    Congratulations Nick!

    SST wing issue...
Kel arrived this weekend and after flying for a wile he said that his wing was not flying right. After talking about the problem I went for a flight with Kel. On take-off the aircraft lunged sideways on take-off and climbed at a very slow rate. This was very unusual for the SST wing. The landing was made at very high speed as well. After thinking about this for a wile I pulled out the batten profile and we removed each batten one at a time and checked them. The left side battens were out by quite a bit, so I put them back to the shape on the profile. We then flew Kel aircraft in the same way as we had done before. What a difference... The aircraft now had no Violante turn to the left on take-off and the climb rate was back to what it should be. So if you are having a problem with your SST wing or any other wing first check your batten profile.

We have another new Pilot at YFT. Nick passed his flight test last week and is now a Licenced pilot. Well done Nick.

Hi All, I love this site and Leo those photos are great. That's the reason I joined this site. I am not a member of any other site. Lets keep this one a light hearted site. Can we please stop with the spiral dive stuff NOW.
    All the best

It has been sad to see so many deaths (of friends, aquaintances and people I have read about) in trikes, over the last few months. It is all very well to say to "fly within the placarded limits of the aircraft" but it is just as important that you recognise your own piloting limitations as well as your trike's, and that you take into account weather and terrain for any prospective flight. Pilots often upgrade or downgrade their wings, but are not receiving any training on the new wing. I believe that it might be an idea to have an endorsement on each wing, BY A PERSON WHO HAS REGULARLY FLOWN EACH TYPE OF WING, and who understands and can demonstrate the different flying characteristics of each wing to the new owner...???

Well yft I've considered all the options and I do agree with you see my post supporting you and Joe Hochman

  • Jozinko

It was one of (many other) things, what fascinated me at Yarrawonga - flying "within the placarded limits". And there wasnt any place for mistakes. Great work!

  • Jozinko

Absolutely I agree with you YFT, but Im sure, if Steve would to know, how to do it, they both would be here

  • YFT

Hi All, as you know I don't make many comments on training on any website. So this is my two bobs worth. If you fly your Trike within the placarded limits you will not have a problem with the so called spiral dive. Remember a Spiral dive is a controlled maneuver. The Incipient spin is NOT and you should not Confuse them!

Hey YFT, last Megafauna ended long time ago... Where are photos and videos from? :)

Im very sad about lost of our kind friends. But about 500ft it seems me quite comfortable high to recover from a spiral. My question is: Could be start their accident by any health throuble?

  • ToucanFly

Incredibly sad news. Michelle and Steve (Buzzy Bee) were the kind of people who once you met, you felt as if you had known them all your life. Will really miss their big smiles, friendly nature and sense of humour. Just a huge loss to the triking community. Life really is unfair to some.

  • Happy Triker

Very very sad to hear the tragedy. Everybody saying they are great people. If it was from 500 feet, mostly there was not enough time to do so, and even parachute deployed, it probably won't completely open. Condolences to his family and friends.

  • wefly

Very tragic news.. met Steve & Michelle during my last trip to YFT in Sept 2014. Absolutely beautiful people with friendly happy attitudes.. sadly this is another Aussie trike accident taking two more of our friends. May the angels fly them into heaven with graceful peace, my sincere thoughts to the children & family members. Truly a sad day.

Been pretty shook up about steve and his lovely charming wife michelle. I can still see his kindly smile. Certainly we must wait for more information. He seemed like a competent pilot to me. Dosnt make sense to me. Spiral from 500agl no chute deployment. Peter i agree with an earlier comment you made. As its certainly good to have the knowlege of how to recover from spiral the first line of defence clearly
Must be avoidance at or below 500 ft agl. Peter please give our codolances to everyone. Steve and MIchelle will be truly missed.

Just found out this morning. I also would like to sincerely contribute my condolences to family an friends of Steve and Michelle.

  • RizzyWizzy

I am so sorry to hear this Peter. My condolences to the family and friends.

  • Rick D

Our condolences also, this is so sad to hear.

  • YFT

Hi All, and thank you for condolences. The family I am guessing is still coming to terms with what has happened. Jozinko, and David I will ring you soon. It seems that two aircraft were coming into land when the first pilot looked around and saw Steve spiraling nose first into the ground from about 500 feet. I must stress that this accident happened at Glenn Innes and that is nowhere near Yarrawonga. Steve was a friend who had been on the Megefauna flyaway last year and was booked in on this years trip as well. He was looking at buying my yellow Tanarg. However I believe he purchased a new Airborne Tundra Arrow. If I fined out any more I will let you all Know.
