Los Angeles Flight- Day & NIGHT

Private Pilot Night Training in an Air Creation Tanarg trike flying down to Los Angeles then over the city at night with Matt Liknaitzky.
A lot of preparation and study went into this, but when all was said and done ...as Matt said, "That was Awesome! Too much Fun!"

Rock stars flying around. Ive flown a piper archer at night but never crossed my mind in a trike exspecially over the city of falling angels. Quite a feat xc iam really impressed

  • RizzyWizzy

Over the years I have seen some great trike movies but this my friend is definitely one of my top favorite movies. Amazing is the word. I enjoyed watching it so much, you experienced it live...what an amazing experience. When you go near the Pacific ocean in your night flight...for some funny reason I started making me a bit uncomfortable. Loved your landing at night, it must have made you feel like piloting a 747...LOL...amazing..top box movie..Congrats again. I also loved you flying over LAX and that jet taking off...wow :D

  • white eagle

Well iam just posting so this remains at the top of the thread for awhile
    A must see movie

  • Dave G

OK......WOW! that was worth waiting for. I'm gonna get some popcorn....call Barb.....and watch it again for the third time.

The music was a perfect match for those crazy sped-up scenes....Loved it so much, Thank you.

Excellent job! The WX looked great for your flight down, which would be enough fun for most folks even *without* the night flying. Your video did a really nice job of capturing the look and feel of flying at night - a special feeling, for sure.

    More videos, please...

  • Hostman

We'll done David, I can see more cameras in your future...

  • Rebel

great video. I had to do all that up in washington with almost no lights

  • Ken

Oh Hell Yes! Great Content, editing, timing, music, mix of camera angles. This one has it all. I can't believe you've been keeping your video SkillZ a secret all this time!

  • XC Triker

@Rebel777, I think Kim & Jim are going to Copperstate and Leo too. I'd go, but I have to give back my Oxygen system I borrowed pronto and have a special mission with it if the weather is good-- one last chance it looks like. Will take the new GoPro Janet got me for my birthday-- she'd been asking for a while, but I kept saying I never do anything with the video I get ... well, the times they are a changin' ;)        Flying in the relative wilderness of washington at night, over cold water inlets is much harder--  excellent job Rebel-- dig out that old video and pop something up!

Firstlight, Hostman, Ken, Dave G, Rizz, Whitey,  thank you!! I really like to share trike stuff, and those great comments make it all worth it. I'll endeavor to change more electrons into video in the future-- if you guys do the same. Your recent videos (Low Rider, Monument Gathering, Flying High, all the great stuff from Oz and everybody's) have been inspirational.

Everyone has a standing invite to go flying together- I've sussed out that there's some good (relatively safe) night flying possibly to be had along the beach here too.

  • Jozinko

This is awesome video!!! Im sure, it must been more fun there. The night flights was really crazy, but incredible nice. Excellent job!

  • Ttabs

Now THAT'S COOL!!!    Night flying will be the next big step for me too.  I'll have to do a low fly by in Elk River to clear the runway of deer and elk though!  lol

    Nice Job!

  • Diego Sagrera

Very nice video!!! That night flight was awesome! Very nice edit the music fits perfectly to the video!

  • Noel C

It was a buzz just watching that flight.  Great experience flying over LAX.  We dont really get that opportunity in OZ to get that close to major airports with the Trikes.  A great achievement in a great looking red trike....wish I had one just like it........Wait a minute I Do!.

  • Ken

Just watching this one again and again. I'm really surprised how dark the runways actually look relative to street lights etc. Thank goodness for the strobes leading your way. Was this your perception also, or just an illusion due to the camera/lighting etc?

  • XC Triker

Thank you guys again, it means a lot to me that you guys enjoyed it. Be careful @Ttabs-- (I think you were kinda kidding) maybe use a fog horn too (I got a cheap airhorn and have it tucked under the dash on velcro and a leash in case I ever have to come down silently engine out on a beach with people or a soccer field, etc).

It was very dark out, but not quite as dark as in the video--- almost though. Flying over dark ground like Ttabs or @Rebel777 would be more difficult. LA has complex airspsace, but the benefit to that is because there are many airports- little oases of black where no hidden rocks, holes or power lines exist. So, you fly at an altitude that gives you glide from one to the next and stay out of / or communicate with any airspace you go through-- harder technically, but safer. To see an airport you have to kinda know where to look (with GPS) distances are very hard to judge (and landing height)- then stare and wait for the regular flash of the airport's beacon signal. It didn't show in the video, but was super cool and powerful feeling when we got close to an airport and clicked the mic several times and the runway lights lit up!!!! This is God coming in, I said let there be light!!! Even better at Torrance with that animated row of lights leading to the green threshold bar (can you see the arrows just barely get illuminated by the landing light leading to the displaced threshold and the green lights at the beginning?)
I don't plan on using night flying much, certainly not purposefully over dark wilderness (Matt says he plans flights back to LA to arrive past the mountains at about sunset-- then he doesn't have the unsafe night mountain crossing, but does get the beauty of LA at night.) You can't see any ground dangers basically at night, so airports represent one of the only "for sure" areas cleared of obstacles. I have a beach about 5 miles from my airport which is nearly deserted during the day, and should definitely be at night (otherwise it's kinda wilderness here too- farms, but vineyards, sprinklers, ditches, power lines, etc) and I've flown it a million times-- there are no power lines there and it's a gentle sloping beach, with Oceano airport at the N end.. Flying over it on a moonlit night with bio-luminescence in the waves could be spectacular and relatively safe for engine out provided correct altitudes.

Matt sent this link to the various light systems used at airports (I'm sure it applies worldwide):

Noel, you do have one just like it!!! Anyone can do this, just gradual training building one step on the other.

  • XC Triker

How hard could night flying be?  This Guy did landed at Night on his first time at the controls when the pilot died !!!

Outstanding Dave, thanks so much for staying in touch and letting me know about your latest night flight movie... Holy Dooly. I found myself agreeing with some of the earlier comments, great movie in every sense = Tick, all the "what ifs" putting me on the edge of my seat = Tick and of course watching it several times = Tick. Thanks so much for sharing and I guess 'raising the bar'. Brilliant mate
