I was talking with a friend tonight and mentioned this vid-- he had not seen it. Since I'm sharing it with him, might as well share it here too.
It is VERY cool!!!! Flying, but not a trike. Great skill !!! Legendary in fact!!!

There are other / longer videos of Bob Hoover if you liked that one.  I believe he got started near WWII when he had to teach military pilots that the P-38 lightning was not a death trap if an engine went out.  That was the popular notion--  however as is often the case, it comes down to training, knowledge, skill, & practice

He was therefore a natural to fly for the factory-- to show that an engine out in this plane was ok for it's customers who were skittish at the time-- I think maybe there had been an accident or two.

Live convo with me and Jagsy just now:

Jagsy: just watching the Hoover video flying with his engines dead... serious gonads smile

Me: yeah, I can see that
but this guy is really more about skill and knowledge that's why I like what he does
    he makes it an art
does the same exact thing every time in his show-- so basically proven without making up new shit to impress people
he also was flying for the  factry-- to show that an engine out in this plane was ok for it's customers who were skittish
Jagsy: I'd be more than skitish with an engine out
Me: anyone can do ballsy shit at least once smile
so balls don't particular impress me
Jagsy: I agree there is much to be admired when someone has developed such a skill level.... in anything
Me: I actually like TITS much better smile
Jagsy: no arguments from me there mate smile

When I worked at LAX tower (71-73) an Aero Commander was on a 3 mile final for runway 25L and the pilot asked me if there was traffic close behind him for the same runway. I told him that the next arrival for 25L was about 6 miles behind him.

Without warning the Aero Commander did a loop and then landed on 25L. Obviously I was startled and another controller told me "oh, that just Bob Hoover. He does that all the time".

Wow, I bet that woke the crew up!

Is that (was that) legal ?  Approximately what year was that?

Bob Hoover got away with a lot of stuff due to his popularity. This was probably around 1971-1972.
