Papalotzin the movie- Following Monarch Butterflies on their thousand miles migration in a trike

This movie was recommended by John "Ole" Olson @WingedGringo It's designed to draw attention to the fragility of nature and yet its strength and beauty. Following their migration in what some would think was a fragile aircraft-- a trike painted with butterfly wings.

Monarch numbers are plummeting-- and with them, birds and animals that feed upon their previously vast numbers along the migration route are having a hard time as well.

    From Wikipedia:  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarch_butterfly)

The Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is a milkweed butterfly (subfamily Danainae) in the family Nymphalidae. It is perhaps the best known of all North American butterflies. Since the 19th century, it has been found in New Zealand, and in Australia since 1871, where it is called the wanderer. It is resident in the Canary Islands, the Azores, and Madeira, and is found as an occasional migrant in Western Europe and a rare migrant in the United Kingdom. Its wings feature an easily recognizable orange and black pattern, with a wingspan of 8.9–10.2 cm (3½–4 in)
The monarch is famous for its southward late summer/autumn migration from the United States and southern Canada to Mexico and coastal California, and northward return in spring,  which occurs over the lifespans of THREE to FOUR generations of the butterfly!!!

It just blows me away that something so small can fly such long distances and navigate better than me with GPS, pick up strong wind currents and stay together.  Not only that, but it is not one individual butterfly that does it-- the butterfly's grand children finally make it to the destination, and then repeat the cycle.  Wow!!!

One of the migration sites, just happens to be right next to Oceano Airport!!!!  (They come around October) It looks kinda like this with our eucalyptus (from Oz) trees covered with Monarchs on a good year, but their numbers have been dropping tremendously.

Hey, there's some very cool pics of their wing HERE AT THIS SITE.  Hey, @Ttabs, it looks like they may have used an all white wing (at least the top) and put a giant Monarch sticker on it-- looks great (like your idea)!!!  I haven't seen many (any?) trikes with multi-colored upper surfaces.

We got this movie several months ago, it was cool.  Trike flying following the path of the Monarch butterfly migration (in this case Great Lakes to Mexico City (Valle de Bravo)).  Just read that the monarch numbers have plunged further from billions to less than 33M due to loss of habitat and milkweed (associated with heavy use of herbicides).  Species that feed on their once vast numbers are affected too ...   You can plant milkweed
