First Flight

This was my first flight lesson in any aircraft of any kind. How I waited so long I’ll never know, as I had early aspirations of becoming a pilot. I found my way to weight shift trikes, and Leo in particular through a series of coincidence. I recall first seeing ultralight trikes being flown sometime during my high school years (25+ years ago) at the Albuquerque balloon festival. Time passed…. Then about a year ago my mom sent me an article on a new sport called Aerotrekking – involving cross country hops in the very same weight shift trikes. The article was eventually archived (by a natural sedimentation process on my desk) and forgotten. Then a year later I saw a flyer at the local Albertson’s bulletin board that just caught my eye – ultralight trike flight lessons provided by a local instructor right here in Boulder City! Follow this up on my fortune at luch from my favorite Thai restaurant “Focus on your long-term goal. Don’t hesitate to act now.” I made the call and scheduled a lesson soon after.

I was hooked from Day 1, the flight was just breath taking, not just from the new perspective that seeing a 2d world become 3 dimensional brings, but the feeling you get flying the front seat of a light sport trike is almost undescribable. A new freedom is born inside, and you have the experience that you can only imagine a soaring bird must feel. It reminds me of a quote from a favorite book...

“He was not bone and feather but a perfect idea of freedom and flight, limited by nothing at all”

You know Ken, I like to smile when I think about how a fortune cookie changed your whole life...“Focus on your long-term goal. Don’t hesitate to act now.” and here you are flying :-))
