If you subscribe to the "Breadcrumb" feature of the Spot Locator, and let friends / family know when to expect you.  They can follow you online &/or if you do not check in on time, they can go online and see where the breadcrumbs end.  This is very useful.  I went the cheap route and got the McMurdo beacon because there are no subscription fees for anything, ever.  After the first year, not paying additional fees, the McMurdo is cheaper than the Spot-  it also had a better antenna (reception./signal) than the Spot 1, and possibly the Spot 2.

There is an app for smart phones that will give you a breadcrumb feature also for free, but if you are in the middle of nowhere without cell signal, it will not work as well.  However, I have flown some remote places and often have signal, and or pick it up along the way again-- so, it will leave crumbs though they may be broken.
