Flying the Dirty Devil River Canyon

Paul and I flew 7.5 hours to reach Hite Utah, where the Dirty Devil river joins the Colorado River. Now the fun would begin.

We continued on for another 45 minutes through a spectacular canyon, and landed at the Dirty Devil Airstrip. Unlike most backcountry airstrips, this one has no road access at all, it can only be reached from the air. We camped overnight, then got up early the next morning to exit the wilderness by following the river to the north.

Oh wow, Jeff you don't know how much I look forward to your flights and videos!!!  They are inspirational.  I forever keep chasing you on adventures ;)

Good music.  Nice cutaway at the end !

I must to agree with XC. I saw some your other vidos and they all are very beautiful. Its unbelievable wonderful to fly along the river, under the high rocks on the sides. And the huge space in the canyons!!!

howdy jeff  i had to put this one up on the bigscreen. just loved the geological features of the cliffs as nature slowly tears it into sand. and what a runway to camp on with no rv parks to destroy the evening solitude. i was wondering what kind of bag you use to skycamp with. ive got a couple of everest climbing bags there good to neg 40 and weigh 2 and 1/2 lbs. great for triking. mayby you would post a little on your gear prep for such adventures that would be a good read.your choice of music was perfect really added to the adventure. and very nice views with a trike (paul) in front. bravo    i always look foward to your videos . now maybe we could get xc to hurry up on that whitney footage. and he calls me a wookie?anyways thanks for all you do to make this site interesting.

Hey, white eagle and everyone else.  Glad you liked the video.  I got enough for 2 or 3 more if I can get around to them.

I flew hanggliders from 1982-1992, and in Albuquerque from 1984-1992.  I am sure we must have crossed paths.  I am try to figure out who you are (white eagle)?

The trip was the first week of October which wasn't too cold, though we did have frost on the tent in the morning.  The last night at Nokai Dome I slept under the stars and was fine.  I keep the gear to a minimum for camping.  Tent, sleeping bag, I usually share the stove with whoever I am camping with.   Food is minimal too, so I when I have to return to civilization for fuel, I grab something good to eat too.

Camping at remote dirt strip is greatest experience you can have with a trike.  I really like the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere, but is good to have a couple people with you.  This increases the safety by a factor of 1000000.   If something goes wrong with the trike, you can fly out on another, get repair gear, come back.  So far I have not needed to this, but it makes the trip a lot more enjoyable to fly with friends this  way.

Holy cow, Jeff!  That was absolutely fantastic!  The landscape, views and geology that you show in this video and incredible.  The power of water and wind erosion over time is impressive.  I have always enjoyed your videos but this one in particular is awesome.  Great music choice too.  Given that areas you show (NM, CO, AZ, UT) in many of your videos it is not surprising that such impressive scenery is available to capture on video.  Your videos inspire me to do more in the area of inflight video.  I look forward to you additional footage.  Oh, BTW flying in this area some day now has to be on my bucket list.  Thanks for sharing.

Wow... What an amazing trip.  Beautiful scenery and some really great shots.  That combined with the music captures a sense of just how awesome this flight must have been.  A great adventure.  Thanks much for sharing this and also your well commented photo album of this trip.
