Hang glider/paraglider mid air Can't believe they didn't see each other.

Has happened a few times on video.  I was thermalling with a PG directly over a ridge spine in Big Sur when a PG turned 100° left directly into me without clearing his turn--  fortunately, my spider sense or something told me he was about to do that (probably I realized subconsciously he was on the outside edge of the thermal and would probably turn in) or I might not be here today.  So, I had just began a turn away from him when he did it--  I increased the rate of the turn and escaped.  If I hadn't already started it, the control lag / adverse yaw would've impacted us.  I screamed WTF!!! as I turned away and he was wide eyed staring back at me-- my heart was racing.  He later said, he wasn't used to coring with HGs and didn't realize I couldn't / wouldn't turn on a dime as well.  A PG looks like a 2 story tuna net when you're face to face with them! Scary!

I hate to say it, but they often practice "kiting" in the LZ after they land, practicing how long they can keep their wing up IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LZ!!!  This is particularly concerning when a HG is on downwind-- there's no stopping that train.  Similar at Salton Sea this last time, except with PPCs-- they parked in the middle of the small strip, pointed their fan at our trikes (parked now behind them, off to the side of the strip), warmed up their engines blowing dust and turbulence at us for 8 minutes, then casually spread out their wing mid strip and eventually took off.  Later in the day, I was wanting to land the squirely trike I borrowed and had to buzz the strip twice to get the message across that someone wanted to land.

There is a difference of thinking between pilots of all type of aircraft--  a Helicopter killed one of the Wills Wing brothers by flying directly over his HG while filming.  One type didn't understand / anticipate the other type's needs and limitations.

I'm sure trikes don't fully understand other pilots-- though we should all try and see the bigger picture and what the others needs and capabilities are, and give lots of leeway / benefit of the doubt.  Be courteous-- no place to insist on "right of way."  Sailplanes can't see down very well- HG can't see above very well, so be careful thermalling together.  We're all sky brothers and sisters.

In this video, it's hard to tell what happened--  looked like mutual miscalculation (likely again based on misconceptions of what the other would do if in the same type of aircraft as they were).  Keep an open, open mind and consideration of what MIGHT happen so you can be a step or two ahead.

Glider rage? in this case I think more responsibility is on the Hang glider pilot. I hope neither of these pilots were thinking that the other has the responsibility to move.

  • RizzyWizzy

Is this how gliders mate in the wild?

  • white eagle

Rizzy there's rite of way rules even for thermaling.didn't look like ridge lift to me.looked like every one crowding on boomer.I wouldn't even entered that arena.

  • white eagle

It looks as though PPC was in the up part of the lift.hang glider should have moved to the right but hang glider looked like he was climbing under so I doubt that he even saw him.just to crowded! Kinds like Saturday at the skate park someones going to

Whoa, right on cue an article submitted to the Oz Report today (written yesterday) is titled "Clear the LZ"  it's long, but the focus is on giving the other pilot room and courtesy.  The article was prompted by yet another accident with the landing pilot sustaining serious injuries.
