Private Cuyama Airstrip- Directly overtop

More info on the strip can be found here (http://www.airnav.com/airport/5CN4) -- it is land by permission only.  (NOTE: Where I talk about the "Cuyama" Rwy, it is NOT actually the now closed previously public Cuyama airport-  We are talking about the privately owned Airstrip near Cuyama.)

I'm concerned about the asphalt at the beginning (~100') that degrades to dirt strip-- I wonder if this means there are chunks of asphalt in the dirt right after touch down-- this could be a big deal for pusher props. It's just a guess on my part at this time based on a fly-over ...  so use your own judgement.

AirNav says the "Cuyama" Rwy is:

  • "Dirt, in good condition."
  • "2600 x 60 ft"
  • "Elevation: 2200 ft. / 671 m (estimated)"
  • "30 ft. plines, 50 ft. from runway"

Given the Power lines at the North end of the Rwy,  it looked to us like you'd want to use the entire Rwy-  it was warm when we flew over, and density altitude was about 3,500'.   If someone on the ground has better details and comments, please share them.

Over all, both areas are "pretty stark" as Ken says.  Which to me was part of the fun of California Valley adventures in the past as it focussed everyone on the flying.  Cuyama seemed a bit more stark then Buttonwillow.  (To reduce the starkness, another person suggested we fly out of Oceano this weekend also, though I wasn't as enthused by that as Oceano Airport day is next weekend and we will be there then.)

Over all Plusses for Cuyama:

ABRESCO will be there- Balloons, BBQ set up, we are invited as long as we have insurance and sign up.  Good camping.  Caution:  Redline in photo is a power line.

Plusses for Buttonwillow:

Many trikers will be there.  Runway much better shape.  I didn't see powerlines that close (doesn't mean I just didn't miss them).  Town of buttonwillow not too close (we will be there without an official invite- though it is a public airport), but close enough for gas, food, lodging, possibly a campground if we get our RVs kicked out (minor possibility I think).

At this point, since we can fly over Cuyama from ButtonWillow, I think Henry & I have decided to fly out of ButtonWillow-- We can all still get together, and everyone can make their own choices.  I just tried to lay it out for 'yall
