What is the dollar amount a Sports Pilot can ask for sharing expenses?

Anyone knows what FAA thinks as a right dollar amount that a Sports Pilot can ask their passenger for sharing flying expense?

    Hi Rizzy

A sport pilot, may share direct expenses for a flight on a pro rata basis. That is, the direct expenses for the flight (fuel, oil, landing or ramp fees, aircraft rental for that particular flight if you are actually renting (not if you own the trike) etc.) may be divided equally between the pilot and passenger.

Fees relating to aircraft insurance, hangar rent, financing, or other non-direct expenses cannot be shared. Only those fees and costs directly related to the specific flight may be shared.

Exactly $62/hr  or half that = $31  ;)     See HERE, then scroll down the page of responses including Rebels, and see that Peter is correct.  Long story short, not much!

BTW:  The SEARCH function on this site works very well (better than other sites) to let you know what answers may already be out there.

you can only charge 1/2 of fuel used, oil used, ramp fees and rental of aircraft for the flight IF you are renting. The other costs you list are the cost of operating the trike, but you cannot share these expenses with a passenger.

Yes Peter, sorry that wasn't clear, I was agreeing with you AND Rebel who said the same thing before.  I was sorta kidding about the $62/31-  that is an estimate of what you could charge IF half the true operating costs were allowed, BUT since only fuel, oil and maybe rental/ramp fees can be shared the actual amount is .... Not Much.

Got it. Thanks. Yes the amount you can actually charge hardly makes it worthwhile compared to the actual costs.

Yeah, what are we really going to do ... land and insist our passenger give us $8 for the last hour of flight, but not a penny more (because that would be illegal) ?  That's kinda like charging someone who eats dinner at your house !!

(1 hr fuel ~ 4 gallons = ~ $16,  Oil used in an hour (4-stroke) = None.  You may divide $16+none in half.)

Besides, when any money gets exchanged suddenly legal liability changes...  let someone land on your property, recreational use law almost eliminates liability.  Ask someone for $10 to cover minimal costs to land on your property--  you are now 100% liable for everything.   Gain $10, lose $500K and years of your life.
