Optional safety equipment installed on an ultralight trike is being credited with saving the life of a veteran pilot who crashed into a South Surrey blueberry field Monday.

“You invest in them and you hope you never use them,” Victor Okunev, co-owner of Open Skies Aviation, said of the ballistic parachute he believes saved his partner, Mikhail Gavrikov.

Broken cable on a strutted wing? Hard to imagine given the low tension on lower fore/aft cables. More likely improper set-up. However, I would very much like to know if it was metal fatigue from vibration. This has concerned me since I first started triking in the late 70’s and on one occasion the rear cable did fail on a trike due to fatigue. I’ve since used big cables. Looks better and can’t hurt. But, theoretically, not necessary.

Wow, a save at only 300 feet !  The trike looks in great shape considering.  Was sad to hear the pilot broke his femur.  Ken, are you going to monitor the web for the final report?  --> CSI group

Looks like they found the cause of this accident - broken nose wire shackle on the Aeros Profi TL

Broken front shackle Aeros Profi TL

cburg I would like to have heavier cables on my soaring trike.and maybe a heavier tang.so should I contact wills wing and have them make them? Also I don't like the clevis pins on the struts of my North wing mustang 2 it seems like weak link any suggestions?

I make all my own rigging (when mods are desired), but perhaps West Marine will do it if you don’t tell them what it’s for. I doubt WW will do it for you. Consider learning how to do rigging.

Make everything 3/16”…the extra drag on uncoated cable is nothing.

I don’t like any shackles on my flying wires…I’ve never trusted them.

As far as clevis pins, just use a bolt and a nut with two wrenches in your pocket.

The only shackles I’ve ever used (and still use) are for dangling the pull start pulley…and I’ve had two break on the ground…I’d never trust a shackle on a flying wire.

Thanks cburg maybe I'll have you make them for me? Not that I don't trust the cables on my TRIKE but I was thinking that if I replace them that I would like a heavier cable.an an4 bolt and nut would be a hassle in set up but more secure.just don't trust the clevis and ring on the struts.gonna look into something more fail safe thanks

I'm working in Holland...we had 10C high and 5C low last week. Rainy, windy and cold...I'm ready to get back to Houston where it's 90F.
