Bull River Valley and the Dr. Forrest Bird Museum

By Ttabs Comments (4)

Join George and I as we depart Bonners Ferry ID with the wives and head SE along hwy 2 to the Kooteni River Falls. From there, we head south along hwy 56 through Bull River Valley nestled against the foothills of the Cabinet Mountains. Once we reach the Clark Fork River, we head NW to Lake Pend Oreille and visit the Dr. Forrest Bird museum of aviation and inventors. A remarkable man who touched the lives of many people and was an icon in the aviation community. Ask anyone you can think of, from Neil Armstrong to Chuck Yager - they all knew Dr. Bird as he too was amongst the elite in the circles of our great aviators.

Dr. Bird passed away at his home there the day after our visit. We were honored -as you will see - to give him a last salute.

Beautiful tom. And very nice tribute to the late dr byrd. I was just up there on the bull river helping dan buy his trike. I challenge you and geo to do the same flight in the fall when the cottonwoods, aspens and tamaracks change color that aera is exspressly beautifull and alive with ambiguous colors. It was great to see you kathy and geo and lisa flying together. You all are always bizzy giving everyone rides. I always like to see you and geo and kathy and lisa flying. Kinda like the movie out of africa when merril streep and robert redford hold hands in the steerman. Oh crap iam gonna get weepy.

Really tom turned off the lousy movie sonya and i were watching and thouroughly enjoyed yours!!

Tom, thanks for the video, great memories from flying in that area. I have flown out of Dr. Bird's runway at the museum many times. One of nature's more spectacular views is at around 200' AGL on takeoff when the lake comes into view. I had the great honor to meet and talk to Dr. Bird and take his wife for an intro flight back in the BFI days. Very cool. The mornng before Pamela's flight one of Dr. Bird's A&Ps stopped by while we were doing a preflight on the trike. Said he had never seen one up close and would I mind if he took a closer look at it. I am certain he was acting on orders from Dr. Bird as he did a quite thorough inspection, good enough to find a motor mount bolt that needed tightening. Dr. Bird was an amazing man. I attended an informal lecture he gave to several doctors at the museum. In his 80s at the time he stood in front of the group and spoke for nearly 3 hours. We finally had to sit down next to a wall but the good Dr. just stood there and spoke the whole time. FWIIW, his lecture, while quite technical, was fascinating. I had to spend some time on the net to find out what some of the terms he used meant but his history in both aviation and medicine would require far more than 3 hours to describe. If y'all ever get near Sand Point, Idaho the museum is a must see.
