A flight up the west coast this morning was quite rewarding with spectacular water views and active Humpback whales.

Hi CB. You took Hedgeviews comment to heart and gave us some whales.  great stuff.

  • crayonbox

Thanks guys.... I hope hedgeview enjoys it too :)

The whales will be here for about 6 more weeks, before they have all migrated south to Antarctica with the newly born whale calves.  So maybe i'll see them a couple more times yet.

  • Hedgeview

Nice one Crayon.  Magnificent stretch of coastline beautifully shot.  Maybe some dolphins leaping next time????

Great movie CB !!!   Vibrant colors-- I wanted to go swimming so badly (then I thought about great whites ...  ah, screw it)!     We have weird regulations about Marine Mammals here and altitude restrictions of up to 20,000 feet away (laterally in that case) from them in certain spots-- and they don't freakin' publish it on our nav sectionals (No, that would make too much sense!!)-- it's published somewhere else entirely, and very vague!!  To defend ourselves against a violation, we have to prove no animals were molested, herded, harassed, harried, etc.  Just how do we get the whales to testify on our behalf ?

  • crayonbox

XC, 20,000ft.  You wouldn't even know the animal was there until you were within 2000ft.  We have a 1000ft altitude restriction (Helicopters are 2000ft). (And laterally).  But the boat are allowed up to 100m, and then must stop.  All the better if the whale comes to the boat, for the observers onboard hey.

  • XC Triker

Yeah, when I was trying to search for the rules, I found some rare 20,000 foot restrictions near breeding areas.  Yeah, how would you know!!!???   Most typical is a 2,000 foot restriction, even then it's hard to know they are there many times--  but your water is much clearer than our Northern Pacific, with the turbulence and cold Japan current running southward along California.

  • Hedgeview

Ahh, crayon.  The temptation would be to add ski's to the Yellow beast in order to drop in at 100 mtrs like the boats for a better look.  As we all know, nothing ever goes wrong when we convert our trikes into seaplanes??????

Wow!!! Beautiful video. What a beautiful place to go flying. Thanks for sharing!
