The closest thing to flying like a bird used to be hang gliding - well last century anyway. But more recently I think this is more like a bird on steroids! (not so much a soaring Eagle)

This isn't really "flying" or like a bird.  There's never any going up.  It's really just semi-controlled falling at less than a straight down angle, like a rock with short wing-fins.  Maybe a rock on steroids.

Great Video and Story though, CB!  Too bad people are paying with their lives, their blood and tears of others.

I don't agree with the GoPro sponsorship statement / message "Be a Hero!" attached.

THIS is hang gliding!  (one of many ways it can be done, this is one of the more ballzy)

Nice video there xct.  What was the competition strategy? Speed?

Hi Crayon at that venue there were two different competitions:

One was pure speed slalom down the mountain, turning around points and then staying below altitude control gates tall inflated pylons (some pilots grazed the grass (and survived!!)).  All the wings were tuned way beyond factory recommendations and the sprogs (reflex) lowered completely.  Tuned for all out speed they were very difficult to land- also they raced early in the morning in calm conditions, no wind landing (faster).

The second competition had two HG pilots launching side by side in midday conditions.  They had to thermal up to a set altitude, go out and back to a certain peak, then race each other down the hill slalom style.  You can see one guy landing short up on the mountain, not enough altitude to clear the pass-  he's out.

You can also see how incredibly agile HG wings are and where we might be able to go with trike wings?  ...and the energy retention as they swoop over the water dragging fingertips forever is just mind blowing- too dangerous though.

Sorry about the vid quality, there is a much better version with commentators-- I'll try and find it.  There are several cool speed gliding videos out there.
