This is a great series Ken!

I think more details / photos on the cardboard mockup process could be posted.  If you haven't done it before, it's really a hack and cut & tape process until you get the first mockup somewhat correct (your wife looked at us like we were nutty kids playing with tape and scissors).  Then you take the first hacked/taped/re-taped cardboard mockup and make a cleaner second cardboard mockup, etc.  Then try and figure out the best way to fold your cardboard as if it were metal, etc.

Was wondering, with all the weight of the fiberglass instrument pod mounted up on the sheet metal pedestal if you might want to stabilize it against the front tube.  A semi-hard attachment there, or even velcro/bungie might slow you down in dropping the wing in winds ... but a rubber saddle that provided compression between the pod and front tube would reduce oscillations in the pod structure that could result in eventual fatigue/failure and would not slow down removal of the front tube.

Good suggestion @XC Triker. I don't get much vibration, especially in flight, but I was thinking that a velcro strapped anchor might really make it easy to do.

How 'bout just industrial velcro between tube and pod?

  • Ken

They don't actually come in contact. There is about 3/8 of an inch or so between them.

Hey XC Triker, I was looking for photos of the cardboard, and cant remember where I put them. Did you take any photos of that process?

  • XC Triker

Affirmative-  I have photos!  Click HERE

RE Velcro-  A neatly cut long oval (maybe 1.5" wide and 3" tall) sticky backed rubber pad, then sticky backed velcro to bridge the 3/8" gap.  Rivet both to pod (1 rivet top and bottom-  the rivet will recess into the velcro slightly.  Should be nearly invisible to the general look.
