X-wind landings

By YFT

Categories: Photography

The wind was 20 to 25kts and 270 degrees. Ken was landing on RWY 19 at YYWG.

Yft iam a little fuzzy on crosswind landings would you kindly post youre proceedures for accomplishing a safe proper crosswind.everything to watch out for. Thanks

  • Jozinko

Hi David, I allways speak to my students: only 2 things are more interested - your high level and your airspeed. If you havent one of them you must have much more second of them. Landing is flight with degreasing level. Crosswind landings are especially difficult because lose of speed near the ground may be caused a big pilots throuble or a crash. Then I teach my students: you will to fight to your control bar on a little high speed, but you never lose the airspeed...and nobody never crashed into the sky...then more of throubles you can to solve by engine power and you cant be ashamed of new airport circuit and try it again. Especialy on a short runway.

Good advice Jozinko.   Well said, thanks.

Thanks jozinko ive done lots and lots of landings in hang gliders but there you have big field and almost always into the wind. But with trike not as good choices so iam being more cautious.so i want to perfect it in my mind brfore .ive handled 8 to 10 45 degress cross and get a little skip on tires but cant imagine having to get caught in gusty crosswind higher than that. This is another great subject for discussion.

You know I don't have a huge recipe for crosswind-- Just stay lined up on center, what ever it takes to do that will give you the correct crab angle.

A long final approach in turb/cross will help you get the feel for the agnle and the frequency of gusts/ etc.  By the time you're finally there, you're used to what the winds doing.  It's almost always smoother in the last 6-12 inches.

As Jozinko and others have said,  pull in for additional speed (I like more than average from the HG background as that's all we had was pull in for extra speed-- no go around, no throttle, just sufficient speed).  Much easier/ smoother with good speed to make quick movements with the bar to adjust height / etc, than to try an use throttle to adjust height, and the trike is more reactive at speed.  Then just use those quick micro-manipulations of the bar to set the back tires down gently and the front tire will line up no problem.  It may take 1/3 of the rwy to get a good moment to set it down in turbulence.  If things aren't good, go around like Jozinko says.  Don't worry, come in with confidence and sufficient speed, you can always do it again (go around)-- have fun flying in the rougher stuff.

DON"T get nervous and try and slow it down and float it slowly onto the ground in turbulence-- you'll get you butt handed to you trying to crash slowly.

I have watched YFT train students in the x-wind technique, and the way he does it is incredibly safe. But it is important to be trained and not just wing it yourself, or you could well come to grief!!! I have landed in 35 knots full on crosswind using this technique. It can look a bit disconcerting until you understand just what is going on, but once you understand the process and have practised it under instruction, it all makes sense. The main idea is to fly into the wind, instead of across the wind, and put your leeward wheel down on the runway first, which slows the aircraft down, and positions the aircraft nose straight down the runway, and the aircraft loses flying speed rapidly.

On 1993 Ive been landed on Kralova pri Senci airport. It was 1st private UL airport in Slovakia. I flew through Karpaty mountains and landed in 12-13m/s (cca 24-26kt) gusty crosswind into trees leeward turbulence. I must did 3 go arounds. I flew to fathers one seat trike with a all trike fairing (Thanks David :)) with MW117 - 11,7m wing. On final I flew on RWY 28 and this crosswind I had from right side. Fathers fairing trike turn front right against to headwind. I flew in runway direction in axle of runway but all trike turned 45° right. There was a great rockandroll... Flash in my mind: it will be a somersault... Then I pull the control bar as a left turn. My left rear wheel touched down first. The trike turned left next I touch down front wheel and right rear. All people was surprised there. In this time dont fly aerodynamic UL planes and on trike landed there absolutely unknown pilot, who had a pilot licence only a month :) Here is link after my landing. You can see the wind sleeve behind me. http://www.jozinko.szm.sk/Web/Fotogaleria/Ma/KralovapriSencipopristati.jpg

You need to fly the trike all the way down to the ground and then some.  Get started on this by doing "wheelie" landings in calm conditions.   I started doing the wheelie a couple years ago and finesse I gained doing those really helped on those strong crosswind landings.   In the strong cross wind, come with lots of extra speed, but make sure you bleed it off before setting down.

Then go back up and do a couple more for practice.

One other tip, if it is 90 degrees cross, stay lined on the centerline.  Resist the temptation to land diagonally across the runway.  Why?  Because if the wind gusts to give you a tail wind, you can catch the nose and forward main tire and make an incredibly hard landing and possibly flip the trike.

Wow great imput here thanks for responding.jeff i like that idea of practicing wheelies .gives you a step into it slowly.thanks jozinko xc yft.and of course anne so now i know youre a down under triker.ill say it again great group of trikers you all have down there great resposes.in my hang glider if it was gusty and varible i would have a higher shorter glide scope and pull the bar in and bleed off the speed.so i supose a higher shorter aproche woud be a good set up for the trike.come in with speed and throttle be quick and attentive on the roll athority. If it feels good bleed off speed stay aligend to the runway get as low into ground effect and try to get the mains down.if it doest feel good pour on the power go around.nice to have that option in hang glider you got 1shot. Knowlege should be shared.alot of trikers need more imput on crosswind componet.
