Couple of things I've never seen on those beaches. Were those horses? and what is that at 4:05?

  • Leo

Bitchin Rick!! Digging the tunes man! Perfect!

@Ken, that's Brents unplanned beach landing. A bad fuel filter forced him down. We drove his rig and picked him up. ;)

  • Rick D

Yes sir, those were horses. At 4:05 we are flying over "Sand Man" Brent. He had a clogged fuel filter which caused him to annoy the beach patrol.

  • Ken

Oh wow, I didn't hear about that little adventure. I bet he got some folks excited over that.

  • Leo

It's intresting Ken, we thought for sure the news vans would be there. But upon arrival everyone there treated it as if it was normal to land on the beach. ><

Very uneventful all things considered. Brent did a fantastic job landing man.

  • Ken

Too bad you all couldn't have a mass landing to check the fuel filters for the entire fleet.

  • Leo

Hahahaha!! Well.....I'll tell ya that back at the airport EVERYONE was checking their fuel filters hahahaha!

  • Jozinko

Great video Rick, as usually. Beautiful views and great adventure, as I saw... :)

Hi rick and deb. Well i must say what a fantastic video and i love the mamma and the pappas!Only problem is i still cant see the video for some reason!been drooling for a week to see another great rick video.so i just put a great comment up cause i already know its good?

  • Rick D

Thanks David, I appreciate the advance comment! Hey, if you go to youtube.com and search on my last name Deigsler, you should find all my videos. See if that works for you.

  • Rick D

Thanks Leo and Joz! Yes Joz, was quite an adventure. Even more so for Sand Man. ;)

Screaming video rick   man i love that wide view of the surf.  I think i can smell it. I tried u tube before but i think i misspelled your name. Still not sure why i cant get vids on alltrikes. I can get pictures.

Really cool vid Rick! Beautiful area. I've never flown beside cliff faces but I've read and been warned they can create rotors and down drafts. Is that something you have seen? Is it an after 11AM thing? There is an area near me that has some cliffs near the bay but I've stayed away.

  • Rick D

Thanks David! Ah yes, will not forget the smell of the surf. On a evening flight with the wind blowing off the ocean I could smell the ocean 10 miles away at a 1,000 feet.

  • Rick D

Thanks Wile E! Yes, if the wind is blowing strong enough off the cliffs there will be rotors. I have to be careful of that where I live in Hurricane, Utah, lots of mountains and other structures. You just need to be aware of wind direction and speed. I have flown with winds strong enough to produce rotors but as long as you are on the windward side of the mountains and structures you can get close with no problem. While we were at the fly-in the weather pattern was a light wind blowing off the land in the early morning and then switching to blowing stronger off the ocean by afternoon. And then there was that magic time frame in between when it was neither which made it sweet! So we had a few bumps near the cliffs at first but very manageable.

    1. Wile e.  I have seen the likes of severe ridge rotors and their nasty effects. The steeper and sharper the edge of a cliff the higher amount of wind to the face the worst they can be. Take a stick tie a lite ribbon on it about 4ft. Find a good sharp ridge where you can get to the backside edge in very strong relative wind. Standing out front of the ridge you will see the ribbon go straight up.this is the band hang gliders launch in to.  The strongest ive done about 25 -28mph. You have to be held on the ground by a nose and side wire men. Called a wire launch  fun and frightning.ive seen guys do 30 - 35 plus wire launches. Now take the ribbon and walk backside a short bit and you will see the ribbon get much calmer and variable. Thats the set up aera. Now go further back and you will see the ribbon reverse directions and get very trashy. This can exstend a long ways and pretty high up? When you hear of hang glider pilots landing backside this is what the are doing. Climbing up into the lift band to fly downwind above the rotors  get a ways backside and land in the relative wind behind the rotor.usually very trashy air and takes some real skill. Imagine that behind the sharp edge cliff  a horizontal tornado  running the length of the ridge and very very violent washing machine air behind it. Avoid it like the plauge?  Ive told this story before but ill do it again  because its a good subject. In the 80s a friend jim bell flying a streak at tatillia peak nm.he was racing the ridge to la bahada ridge and back. Actually ahead of some very good pilots. Decided to cut a little more time off by cutting a sharp corner .flew into the ridge rotor flipped him inverted and slammed him into the lava rock .rip jim. Rick iam pretty sure is a long time ga pilot  staying out in the front of those cliffs there is good rising air. But lee side (THERE BE DRAGONS) Hope this helps anyone.
  • Rick D

Thanks David for your excellent commentary! I be no dragon slayer so I be keeping clear of them dragons. :)

  • Wile E Scott

Great info guys. I'll watch the airspeed and direction before I get closer to the cliffs. I very rarely go out in wind GS is above 10mph so that does help. The cliffs here are also about 40ft so nothing major. The air mechanics you're speaking to make sense so I can avoid the dragons.

Found some video of you yesterday rick  i handnt seen from polsen. I was like that was an awesome landing oh thats rick.  And then dean  colmen came in and greesed a nice landing.

Wile scott  not sure but you fly a profi wing dont you. Ive had a growing intrest in that wing.

  • Rick D

Whoa, I had an awesome landing??? Is there a link to that video or is it on your computer? I remember Dean and us flying a few trips together in Polson, would be neat to see it from a different perspective.

  • Dinga

Great vid Rick, good to see all the beaches and houses along that way, would have been hell fun...... :)

Great insight White Eagle thanks for sharing.

  • Dinga

Hey Rick, YouTube is saying that this vid in no longer available? Has it been taken off due massive copyright breaches or something :))

    Craig

  • Rick D

Thanks for your comments Dinga! I just checked and the video is still up. Are you trying to view it on a different device? There are some copyright restrictions. Here is what YouTube has: "Your video can't be played on some devices. This can include mobile phones, video game consoles, or set-top boxes." Also: "Your video can't be played in these countries: Germany" Other than that it should be available. Kind of odd restrictions...

  • Dinga

Thanks Rick, it appears to be something to do with Apple! Most of the vids on here appear to have disappeared when I access via an IPad but I can watch everything on my laptop? Microsoft 1 - Apple 0 !

  • Ken

Nah its a flash thing. My APPLE laptop views it also
