Fluid Dynamics of Drag

By Rick D Comments (6)

I wondered how much extra drag my round down tubes create versus an airfoil type tube. I grabbed this link from another site (name not mentioned), and I was very surprised to see this professor's test results. Really interesting!

not suprizing at all.  parasidic drag efects much greater portion than we realize. many things are known to reduce parasidic drag as i have adressed in my seagull group  that could easily be incorperated to a more efficiant wing.  a super thin trailing edge. contuoured trailing edge like a birds feathers or a whales flipper. all tubing airfoiled. airflow lines on the wing and fuslage as was done on the boat that won back the americas cup.the math says that these would be very significant improvements.?

I've wondered about this as well. My wing struts are round. The mains and thier support struts are round tubes as well. Add in the lack of wheel fairings and the finns that most trikes have today. By every discussion if encountered regarding Trikes and Drag.... I might as well be flying a Brick.  Thought about making something like these...

Many people don't realize how "draggy" most trikes really are. Even when everything is nicely faired, and the wing is a clean double-surface design, the pilot, passenger, exposed control frame, and rigging add up to a lot of parasitic drag. And, parasitic drag is the kind that goes up 4x as speed goes up 2x (i.e. it gets much worse the faster you go). It's one reason I find it difficult to understand the race to fly 100 mph trikes. It would seem more logical at that point to just buy an airplane IMHO.

Oh yeah, thanks for the video, Rick!

    Cheers, Eric

very well said   eric     i go 100 mph at work    when i fly o to 65 is fine and a room with a view

I disagree. The area I do see a need for a 100mph Trike is in the "getting there" part. Once "there" I want to go about 55. As much as I do love my POS trike, a Fi 912 Skypper with a NW 12 Conquest and electric trim would be a perfect fix to getting to where i want to go and then chillin once I get there. That is why for me, a plane just dosen't work at all and why my POS trike is just too damn slow with my 19M wing and 582 engine combo. Once I save up for a 15M Mustang, I'll be a lil bit faster but, that's all I can afford for the foreseeable future. Just can't afford that kind of tech yet but I would totally do it if I could.

wile i can see both points    hell i would love to have a tanarg 100hp. hell id love to have a de haviland beaver at the same time id love to have a dragonfly or a solairus.but at 59 i have to match my desires to my ability to win the lotto?    wow a soaring trike with the ability to fly from 16 to 150  6hrs of flight time on 5 gls of fuel o percent drag 50/1 glide ratio for under 10 thousand.  iam friken dreaming
