How Close Can Aircrafts Get Before they See Each Other

Not my video, but it is a good example on how distracted or passive we can get while flying. Right of way rules? Well, if you don't see each other at all, how do they apply? If you see other traffic near you never assume they have you in sight as well, be prepare to save your butt. I don't think the guy in the fixed wing aircraft saw the trike at all. You can see the trike pilot trying to get the attention just before it flew under. Can you see the fixed wing aircraft approaching?

I think the plane pilot could to see the trike, because he flew straight and at a lower altitude than the trike. Then he could to see him with a blue sky background. If he didnt kiss his girl friend on a next seat, he could to see him. Other question is: why he didnt say by radio: hey trike, keep the level...surprise come from right :) Because the trike pilot didnt try to get the attention, he was surprised and reacted fast - push the control bar, gave full throttle and showed rude gesture to plane pilot :)

Wow - that was all the way close! I've been flying in a few GA planes, and was surprised how little they looked outside the cockpit, and how poor the view was. Hoping my transponder gives them some sort of altert before I become a bug spot on the window. Be careful out there!

  • jeff trike

I think the plane saw him because he flew directly under him.   He might have been on 122.75 trying to raise the trike on the radio.  Still, that was way too close and rude.  Transpoders are worth their weight in gold.

    WORTH WILE READING in refference to being seen while flying;

Wow - three seconds - thats a stunner

got me thinking transponder? and i think ill be scanning the skies a little harder. that plane if he did see him should of banked to the left rearward of the trike. happy triker maybe this would be a good time to put that video up of your close encounter flying up the cst of cali . great stuff here for keeping us all on are toes?

I agree with you white eagle. If I see another aircraft I will pass well clear just in case they didn't see me, not so close and under like that.  What if the trike pilot decided to do a spiral turn or something like that? This leads me to conclude that the fixed wing guy did not see him or was trying to be stupid.  Right of ways are not just based on your position in relation of another aircraft, you also have to think about the least manueverable aircraft. A transponhder is in my to purchase list, well worth the money. The transponder from Sandia Aerospace (STX 165) looks good for the price and it is going to be my next investment. By the way WE, you still going to the 16hr trike maintenence course?

  • Jozinko

Yea guys, the problem would be happened, if the trike pilot decided to make the forced landing with engine off. YOu can to see, the pilot is looking down for a place or airport... Do you think the transponder will be prevent a collision?

  • Trike Ops

The transponder helps you if traffic is in contact with air traffic control, most GA aircraft fly with some sort of flight following (smart thing to do), thus getting traffic advisories.  Both aircraft can also be equipped with ADS-B OUT/IN receivers, for traffic information. A transponder or ADS-B receiver is better than flying in the blind for you or others, whatever helps for your flying operations and safety. Keep in mind that some fixed wing guys don't talk to private/small/grass fields unless thay are planning on landing there (not saying this is right), but it happens, others use small airfields as Nav checkpoints.  The trike pilot was probably on his home airfield frequency and did not expect to find the fixed wing in his path, he was concentrating in his manuever around the traffic pattern and he did initially look around (kind of fast) for traffic at the beggining of the video. Something as simple as a strobe light could help been seen, I don't see any on the trike.

If you have a transponder on your trike, it will show up on the TCAS system on the other aircraft which nearly all large planes and many smaller planes have onboard.  The trike doesn't need TCAS, but it need at transponder to show up on the other planes TCAS.   Plus the transponder on your trike will cause ATC to route traffic around you, without you ever knowing about it.  The transponder is working to help you fly safe on every flight.  Strobes are a must as well.

Since I installed my transponder, I have not had any near misses.  Before that, I would get scared by a large plane or military plane flying low about once a year.

The plane in the video flew directly under him.  It's a big sky.  What are the odds of that?  My guess is that it was intentional.

  • Jozinko

Thanks guys for explanation. In our country is no one trike with transponder on board. We neednt to use it. Yea, UL planes usually have it here. I would like to have one, because some of air traffic operators didnt allow me enter to their CTR, because they cant to see me at radar. But its terrible exensive....

Yes Jeff, I agree with you - it was intentional.

  • Rick D

Glad all is well. Really no way to know if it was intentional. Pilot may have been distracted for any number of reasons. But whoa, that is a pants filler!

  • Monty

not a 'near miss' a 'near hit'. 'real' pilots spend a lot of time playing with their radios instead of looking outside. i doubt if either pilot saw each other till too late to evade. that was a 'underwear soiler;.

strobes on may have helped, even in daylight they can be seen before the plane is discernable. i ALWAYS have mine lit. i don't wannabe a hood ornament on a bonanza!
