Cloud

Occasionally I see clouds like in the picture. What does this type of cloud tell you. I am wondering if this means there are strong winds aloft. Trying to read the sky better from the ground. Thoughts?

Hi peter those your picture a are lenticular cirrus which are very high winds aloft definitely something I would say is a no go.Davids clouds are mamme clouds look like droopy boobs on bottom risky for bad air I would say.they both can represent sudden
changes in surface winds that would put caution in my flying envelope someone correct me if Iam wrong.Iam particularly alarmed if I see
Cumular nimbus or anvil heads anywhere near my flying scope.a hangie friend of mine in the 80s got sucked up to 40 45 thousand ft 5 hours later dumping his body in a vally (fatal I had to inspect his hg at American aerolights the sail was torn to ribbons and lightning scorched wires.his name was bob abitt my first trike instructor was never a hg once we were taking of and I from hg days w as nervo flying with two anvil heads within 5 miles of the airport it was in the evening and I knew they were going to collapse.my instructor couldn't have been more obnivious of it.result was getting hit by 60mph gust front after landing down wind.I know note not to ignore all the cloud stuff I learned in hang gliding.

Hey Peter, nice shot.  Those actually look similar to what I was shooting--  depends on which way the tails are pointed.  It looks like the "tails" are dropping downward.  If they are blowing sideways, then more like Mares Tails.  David I don't know that much about clouds-  I haven't heard of lenticular cirrus-  I don't see a classic lenticular shape to these.

Well their definately cirrus and high winds aloft. Really nice shot.

Hey David,  I'm not saying you're wrong.  I posted my pic because I don't know what exactly they are, but I've seen them a few times now.

    These will blow your mind:

Those, I know for sure are high winds in waves.

David real nice examples of lenticular clouds.from my understanding lenticular cirrus form from lenticular clouds that are blown apart from jet stream winds that are decending into more stable air.it means a very quick change from stable to unstable.the wave cloud from cumul nimbus in that first example was over my head all day today.there Is definatly some very disturbing changes happening in our atmosphere easily seen if we take the time to look up

Here's some more really awesome Lennie shots (lenticulars) over Mt Ranier:

I was googling "Lenticular Cirrus" to see a photo / description but couldn't find it.

Dude, that Undulatus Aperatus #1 link of 4 above was mind blowing don't you think?

  • XC Triker

Hey Peter,  since this post was from you, it shows your "airports landed" list:  I dropped them into SkyVector for you (HERE) as a map (I reordered them so it wasn't a spaghetti jumble, but you can re-reorder as you  like).  You can stick this link back on your profile if you want, and keep updating it.

Hi David please never fail to correct me if Iam wrong.it was so cool because I was watching a undulatis wave yesterday above my home.anyway I have seen it referred as lenticular cirrus.but I'll explain how I get undulatis(under layer wave)cummie(to combine accumulate)cirrus(to separate cirriated to be torn apart)hence cumuli cirrus.lenticular (flat laminar line)hence lenticular cirrus. strato cirrus (stratosphere straight airflow)hence elongated wispy very high cirrus clouds.I am not sure if Iam following protocol but as I told you before I have a very different way of looking at things which has been useful for me.Iam very eccentric as you might of guessed for instance I don't believe death is the end.that evolution is influenced by will.that dreams are connected to spirit and advanced over the flesh (the other 90% of are brain most don't use.Iam the guy David that in the 70s that would stand on launch eyes closed feeling my spiritual wings growing on my back.I fly them all the time very real more than here in my dreams .nothing is by chance .cold hearted orb that rules the night, removes the colors from are sight but we decide what is right and which is an illusion.face piles of trials with smiles it rivals them that you perceive the Web they weave?

Interesting David.  Funny you mention about not using most of our brain--  I was drying Ken's trike cover in the morning sun today (so the dryer wouldn't ruin the cover I'm selling him) and I was fascinated watching a honey bee clean himself (itself I guess since they're asexual drones right?).  Had six legs, standing on back four legs, alternately wiping eyes, head antenna and back/neck with either front leg, then sticking out it's long tongue, licking the "paw" clean and alternating side to side for a while.  Looked just like a cat washing it's face.  I was wondering how many neurons make up it's brain--  probably only a few hundred and yet it can basically do what a cat or dog can do with millions of neurons-- perceive the need to clean, very complex motions with either leg, navigate in the air in reference to a moving sun, communicate with the hive as to directions to the source of pollen, etc.  I was thinking, what the hell do we do with the rest of our neurons if it only takes that few to do all that!!! ?

Lenticular means lens shaped.  When you look at a lennie from the side, it has the shape of a lens ( bi-convex), just like a magnifying glass in cross-section.  I don't think it means straight / laminar.  However, your other definitions are cool.

Your cover is washed, dried and on it's way Ken!  (Finally!)

You are correct David would you fly near one yes nowhy not? Love the example of the bee.how does a Venus flytrap do what it does without a brain or mucles tiny contracting cells make it snap shut but with no neons how does it know the fly is there.how many people know that we have a brain in our stomach.they have found neon cells in lining they think it's where emotion comes from hence gut instink a useful flying tool.what is universal in the universe common to all created? Light energy cannot be destroyed only converted to something else and photons we try to destroy them and they reappear somewhere else.similar to closing our eyes and falling asleep then dreaming? Me and you have connections David for some very good reasons going to try to fly with you in a dream let me know when you have it.there is nothing you can't see in you're mind no drug needed only you're choice to make it beautiful or ugly.why imagine evil when contemplating how a bee thinks is so privileged and rewarding and to me that is the key by design you must be privileged to find a link between dreams and reality it cannot be done without love.some dreams are jumbled meaningless.some are very vivid and realistic.wisdom knows the difference.to fly to the sun without burning a wing to lye in a meadow and hear the grass sing all these things in our memorys chord can we use them to help us.lovely to see you again my friend ride along with me to the next bend tell me what you see far away forgotten land where empires are turned back to sand? David we are entering a time of great change in the world it is happening before our eyes some see it some don't some survive some won't.Iam sorry David but this is who Iam can't change it.I fly in my dreams the air is a song the clouds are brilliant there's something glorious about them.I love being there. Sincerely you're friend David Jonathan seagull

I'd fly the front side of one in a sail plane (maybe).  Or maybe the Morning Glory in Oz- $hit Yeah!!  (like soaring the bow wave of a massive Great White Shark)

Stacked Lennies???  I don't think so

I love flying dreams, I don't have them very often though.  I still love the Peter Pan ride at Disneyland, flying over all the little people in the towns below.

  • Peter D.

Hi David. Thanks for adding my landings to SkyVector. Fun way to track visually. Got a long way to go to catch up to yours, but I guess that is half the fun!

  • XC Triker

No prob Peter,  there's guys I'm trying to catch up to, like @CraigV, and Buzz Aldrin ;0

Did you post the map to your profile page?

  • Peter D.

Hi David, yes I did post, at least I think I did. I simply pasted the link directly below my listed airports. Is there a better way or place to do so>?

  • Admin

Peter,  that's good, but there's a more elegant way to do it easily here:

You can make your link much more elegant by using this trick (In Line Text links)--  works with any post on AllTrikes

It's how you turn this link:
        http://alltrikes.com/elgg/pages/view/3207/elegant-in-line-text-links-makes-your-posts-look-pro-and-powerful

    Into this:   HERE

Click on "HERE" to see it work and learn how.  The link in "HERE" describes how to do it.  Turns your 4 line long link into one or two words that are an active link themselves.
