You have about the same surface area on your cooler as I do with my two coolers on the left and right. Please tell me about your engine.

Jozinko, very nice!  Looks like your trike/Verner is configured for aerotowing.  What do you tow?  Hang gliders only?  I would imagine your Verner has plenty of power for towing?

  • Yoshiyah Hawkins

I guess I must be slow. I have never heard of a Verner. Is that the engine make? Someone please give me more info on this trike's engine. I am not familiar with it. And where on the earth is this trike? "Let's go to the video." Where are they?????

  • ULtrikepilot

Yoshiyah,  The Verner engine company is located in the Czech Republic.  I think the Jozinkos engine is the VM 133MK but I'll let him confirm that.  I have the JCV-360 which is a small boxer (similar configuration as BMW) on my ultralight trike.  In any case the link above will take you to their website where you can find more information.

You shouldn't have shown me the Verner engine. Man! Are they as nice as they look? I can see all kinds of reasons to go with that package. It comes with its own gearbox. It is in fact an aviation motor. It has it own ECU and everything I had to concoct is already there. The only thing I dont know is what they cost. If I wanted a four stroke I would look at this if the price is right. This is a nice engine. OHC, chain driven. ECU made for it. I dont see how you would go wrong. And I saw Jozinko's trike. Makes mine look like a junkyard dog. Aw crap. I think the grass got greener over there.

No, no, no, Yoshiyah, the BMW engine is definitely NOT a junkyard dog or crap.  From what I have heard it is a fantastic engine.  My understanding is that the company never designed it for aircraft use so one has to go through some adaptations/retrofits like a redrive system to use it.  Quite honestly, I wish BMW would produce an engine for light aircraft use, but I also feel that way about Honda.  I do not claim a long history or much experience with Verner so I will wait until I have many hours on my engine to judge.  So far I have been quite pleased.  Cost, well they are not cheap.  But the US dollar has been a bit weak relative to the Euro which makes them a bit more pricey.  I am sure Jozinko can give more background and information on Verner.  I'm sure he has much more experience with this engine company than I do.

Hi guys! Yosh, your BMW is very good solution! You dont change it!!!! You must to know, that the BMW engine was made for hard conditions on motorcycle. Bad cooling, very dirty... And your trike is very nice too.

About my Verner VM-133MK. As UL said, its from Czech republic. Its 84HP/5500RPM, two cylinder, boxer, air and oil cooled, 4stroke engine. I have an old model with carburatores. Now are made with injection. Weight is 61kg empty and 70kg full, with oil, cooler and exhaust system. I have second VM-133MK. My past engine has reductor 1:2. My present type has reductor 1:2,29. My fuel compsumption envious me all Rotaxes pilots. Now Im flying on average about 7 liters/hour. I have 3 blade prop diam 170cm, then I use my engine on 80HP/5000RPM. My engine was low position mounted, then I can to use 170cm prop only. Then I cant to use full power!!! The prop blades go to a vortex from a blade in front of. If I want to use full power, I would put my engine a little high mount, then I can to use 2 blade prop WarpDrive 192cm (this setting had the Verners demonstration pilot). I flew those demonstration trike and my climbing was 11,5m/s (meters per second!!!) in 2004, with 12,8sqm wing. This engine I sold by 8.000€ without WAT.

I want to tow a HGs and transparents... But I never tow nothing. I didnt make any transparent. My HG friends wants to tow, but I had a worry. My wing is quite fast for GH wings and the best conditions for HG are vhen thermal activity are huge. I wasnt 100% sure, when I want to fly to big thermal activity with a HG on cable behind me... Then I demonted towing system from my engine :)

My trike names Cross 5 Sport and is made in Czech rep too, by Tomi Aviation company. In USA its sold as APEX trike. Very solid metal construction, all wheel braking, 40 liters petrol tank, plastic fairing. I sold it by 2.845€. The price is without an instruments and BRS...

    Jozinko,

I watched some of your vids. They were great. I just kept seeing trike after trike appear in the sky all coming in to land. It was amazing. I have seen nothing like that. Usually when I fly I go alone. I dont really hang with anyone. I have a blast but to have lots of trikes in the air and to be able to check out all the mechanical differences in everyone's ride, is really cool. I dont have a place to keep my trike so it is at home, should I care to call it that. I think I am going to name my trike the ghost. No one sees me. I have one of the coolest motorcycles on the earth. Everyone that knows about bikes goes nuts when they see this bike. Still I ride alone. It is so weird. I am the Ghost. I am changing my name. It would be nice to go to places where there were lots of machines.

Jozinko, It sounds like you have a very cautious approach toward towing and I think that is wise.  If your wing is too fast for towing HG then it is VERY good thinking to be cautious.  A trike configured for towing not only needs to have plenty of power/thrust/hp (which I think yours does) but you do need to have the right wing.  Usually a bigger slower wing where you can fly well above stall speed but also in comfortable speed range for HG wings/pilots.  However, as you correctly said, it also requires that the towing pilot feel quite comfortable with the big thermal air.  Those kinds of conditions can take some time for pilots not comfortable with it to become more comfortable.  Clearly considerable extra risks when towing in those conditions at lower altitudes.  Although I am an aerotow rated HG pilot and did it for quite a while, I have never been a tow pilot.  But I think I would like to do it at some point.  In any case, the towing setup on your trike caught my attention right away.  all the best.  Ult
