This video is for educational purposes only. I know the pilot and called him to get his permission before posting the video. He was OK with the request. The pilot is ok and has been flying for years after this accident. He knows he made a few mistakes. Please no armchair quarterback comments here. Thank you!

What do you mean rizzy no arm chair quaterback comments here?  I can tell you that anywhere i fly i make it a point if their are obsticles such as trees and houses and rivers i make a point of staying at least 100 ft over the tops. Rarely do i fly at ground level to 50 ft agl inless i know the aera or have fully investigated the aera.  I think at best one can say that a pilot can see in the vid that with more speed this pilot may not have been as lucky to avoid serious i jury. And you can clearly see the damage that a control bar can inflict  in a crash . I like flying low and slow but this pilot was throwing caution to the wind.   Very glad he survived

You are correct David. I just didn't want people abusing the pilot. On Facebook groups where I posted, there were unnecessarily aggressive and abusive remarks. He is actually a very experienced pilot. This was a lapse in judgement. Before posting this, I called the pilot and asked if it was ok to post this. We wanted to share this for educational purposes. The pilot already knows what he did wrong. No need to chastise the pilot.

Having said that all positive comments are welcome.  :-)

'let he who is without sin cast the first stone'                                                                                                               Us fortunate 'users of the lowest layer of air clinging to this spinning rock we inhabit, if we fly long enough, and low enough will probably at some time get too close to something un-planned, be it trees, poles, wires or dirt. the pilot on the video needs no admonishment from anyone as to what he did wrong, He knows!  fortunately he lived to fly another day, no fire or shock etc. So, the value of this video is a REMINDER of how quickly s.hit can happen. we all, or should, know NEVER to fly over wires. wires by their very nature have to be supported by something, poles, towers or buildings. fly over the poles  NOT between them. wires are hard to see , poles easier to make out. over the years MANY pilots have had their days spoiled through a skinny little wire getting in their way, wires are here to stay! we're only visiting! i appreciate this pilot for allowing this reminder! it may have saved  one of us the 'inconvenience ' of a wire strike. i really enjoy flying low (and slow!) more than high and 'quickly', though the added possibility of something 'getting in my way' is something i try to remain aware of, leaping elks, giraffes, tree branches, dirt, etc. having created my share of scrap aluminum i'm (sheepishly)  speaking from ( the school of hard knocks ! )  experience, it being the best teacher!  but the fees can be very high!                                             monty

Monty i niether want to sin or cast stones.! And the biggest obstical i want to avoid when flying is the ground!

  • Monty

me too! i only wanna hit air, but once in a while i deviate! usually with pain and $$$$$$ lost!

the train-chasing he did on the video is both fun, dumb and dangerous. i did it in az, the train was rolling at my cruising speed and i was tempted to do a touch-n-go on one of the trailers, but the little bit of sense i have left prevailed, there was a surprising amount of 'whippy air' arround the train but boy, was i tempted! (it was a freight train, no passengers).

I felt bad for you monty on that  last thump! But in all honesty i have a scrap pile of aluminum too? Then  i let my wing down hard breaking  my mustang wing down and punched a noce hole in the trailing edge.bedge.But the good news is for us aging ol farts is we keep taking a licking and keep on ticking. Oh and like an ol dog. Ii like chasing the train too as long as its goin my way and iam flying!

nah WH no sorrow needed! ' you pays yer money n takes yer chances'.  on the video, funny how the pilot 'prudently' removes his registration number, lest it should spontaniously burst into flames! no doubt? good thinking! i am getting a slower wing for flying in arizona, my 12m chronos takes a bit too long to get off the ground for the limited 'runways' here in this part of az farmland. keep the rubber side down! monty  ps,  i've only flown once since i hit 83, and i do aim to quit when i'm 90, or so.  pps there are at two instances i've seen on line of 'spam cans hanging from power lines by their prop, one was in seattle at boeing field, i don't know where the other was, but this can happen to REAL pilots of REAL airplanes !!!!!   monty

Well monty youre an inspiration to me cause iam feeling it at 62? Somehow i seem to think you have a second hand lion on That ranch of yours!

  • Monty

Ai'nt got no ranch WE, were only in AZ till end of march then we are back to rain country seattle

  • white eagle

    That was a joke monty.
