La Ventana Mesa

West of the Rio Puerco, near Mt Taylor is La Ventana Mesa with a maze of canyons connected by windows eroded in the sandstone. I first "discovered" these windows about a year ago in September 2016. When I overlayed my GPS track over topo maps, I saw I flew over La Ventana Mesa. Ventana means Window in spanish, so it became clear I was not the first to see these intricate formations.

I brought my flying buddy Paul up here on a perfect calm wind morning to check them out, and we even found a 4th window hidden in a back corner that I had not known existed before.

After the window flight we took advantage of the calm winds to overfly the summit of Mt Taylor, and its wide deep caldera. On the way back home to Belen we flew past the Paguate ruins and the Grand Canyon of the Rio San Jose. It was a fantastic flight.

More details can be found in my flight log
