What to do when the weather keeps you down? Peruse the terabytes of video and reminisce. Here is the second edition of riding low and fast.

    That was awesome Rick!!

Very cool Rick! The more I fly, the more I appreciate our ability to cruise down as low as we accept risk. The "low and slow" mantra is definitely mine. Great vid!

  • Rick D

Thanks guys. Yes, the risk is higher the lower we fly. As they say, speed and altitude are your friend. But as they also say, no risk, no reward. I try to have an "out" as much as possible. I don't consider myself an adrenalin junky but do appreciate the detail you can see up close.

You know what's interesting to me? So the subject of flying low has come up on the other trike site, and it's more condemned than accepted.

Here's the thing. The videos we make are not 100% of our flying. They are clips of the moments we decide to share. The perception can easily be misinterpreted into "flying irresponsibly".

I think it was Larry I think who said something along the lines of, if you minimize the time you fly low, you can raise your safety factor considerably.

And that’s just it. I think most of us do fly like that. But the video’s perception can be the deceiving factor and most people just can’t seem to look past what they see.

I’m sure there are some who fly 95% of the time skimming the ground, but honestly, I think those pilots are not the majority.

Rick, we've flown together quite a bit. I consider you a great pilot, I've seen your flying skills and at no time have I ever thought you've done anything dangerous. Having said that, and after watching your vid, I wondered if we may see the finger waggers who don't inderstand what I just explained come out of the woodworks.

  • Rick D

Hey Leo, you make some good points. Thanks for your compliment. While I have learned a little about flying trikes there is so much more to learn, really, the learning should be ongoing.

One thing the finger waggers don't see in most of the low flying video clips are the LZs that I try to have as "outs" should I lose power. Even flying low it is still a possibility most of the time, although may not be the softest landings. Admittedly this is not possible all the time.

I thing it is far more dangerous to drive on any road these days than flying low.

Yeah, I left the other site a long time ago, too many expert critics.

There will always be those who wag and condemn, water off the back... :)

Great video Rick. I love places where are you flying. They are incredible nice - rough, but nice. I love low flying, but usually Im flying at sufficient high. I love safe flying. But sometime I want to do some crazy and I do it... :)

  • Rick D

Thanks Joz! It is fun flying both low and high. Each has a distinct perspective.

  • Happy Triker

I love the part you flying over the ridge. It look almost 3D. We should call you "Skimmer" !!

  • Rick D

Thanks Henry! I am developing the trike version of "cliff diving".

  • Ken

I'm not sure what's funner than that! Thanks Rick :)
