First Flight for 2012

There's something of a ritual among recreational aviators when it comes to the change of year time.. Partaking in the last flight of the year, ending at last light on the 31st December and then up early for the first flight of the year on the first of January.

This video is about my second such annual flight, which was organised by Yarrawonga Flight Training. Four aircraft from Yarrawonga (YYWG) and two from Wangaratta(YWGT) (both in Victoria) flew to Albury (YMAY) in New South Wales, landed at the aerodrome and then, not finding anyone at the Albury Aeroclub to have a coffee with, we departed and flew a loop over Lake Hume before returning to Yarrawonga, overflying Corowa (YCOR) enroute.

Just after departure from Albury Aerodrome (YMAY), Willie and I joined up with Peter (CFI) and flew back to Yarrawonga in a tight Vee formation.

Normally Albury Aerodrome is in controlled airspace, but reverts to Class G when the control tower is not open. On that day, the tower was not opening until 90:00 local time, so we departed Yarrawonga at 07:00, leaving plenty of time to be in and out before the CTA activated.

23:46 your hangar looks very well stocked and active--- I'm the only trike at my airport :(    you guys are my flying brothers (& sisters)

I'm hangared at a Class D (Towered airport)--  are trikes allowed into towered airspace in Oz?

Henry says in Japan, they restrict trikes to small 1 mile areas-- no XC or other airspace period!   Too bad, it would be cool to go w Henry and do some flying there otherwise

Hi XCTriker, Yes we can landed XT-912 Trikers in D-Class airspace but not 2 strokes. You must have a transponder, and Radio. The pilot also needs the correct indorsements. In Japan there is very little Recreational flying, but they have some great airports. I was over there picking up a Dornier 288 that was to be Ferried back to Australia. I only saw 1 cessna and verything elis was military. It was funny, we couldn't fly the aircraft with the Japaness markings, but when we put the Aussie ones on people came from everywhere to see us,

Hey, last year I wrote "23:46 your hangar looks very well stocked and active--- I'm the only trike at my airport :(    you guys are my flying brothers (& sisters)"  About halfway through this year, 2 more trikes moved to my airport !!!  One is sharing my hangar-- Now we are 3 trikes !!  Soon, 1,000 trikes !
