Flight to Catalina-- 22 Miles over Open Ocean in a Trike

" Uploaded on Oct 31, 2011
David and I flew from Torrance Airport to Catalina Airport. The distance between airports is 29 miles, 22 miles over open water. We climbed to 9,700 feet to ensure safe glide to land in an emergency such as engine out."

These videos are obviously good because they always make me want to go flying (even though I have watched this one before).  Very inspirational.  Thanks guys.

Very nice video! It must been a "long time" for you, if you were over open water... :)

Thanks guys.  Many of these flights are mental challenges.  @2:17 when it says "A few moments of contemplation time" your eyes are seeing 22 miles of open cold ocean in front of you and you are not high enough to glide--  you have to reflect on the fact that behind you, you are only 1 mile off shore and have PLENTY of glide (and force your mind to accept that)---  We spent weeks planning the contingencies, angles, etc.  The weather window was perfect.   But, you have to calm your mind to the task and go over all your plans B in your head-- reverify to yourself that they are correct, correct for the current situation you are seeing now in real life, etc.  Decide if you need to abort.  Steel your mind to the task.

This trip to the channel islands actually played with my head much worse-- I felt like I was on the moon.  But in reality only about 100 miles from one of the largest cities in the world.  I'd flown "off shore" for 75 miles--  the big military Radar on shore could no longer track me / keep me company.  I was alone.  But actually, my flight was moderately parallel to the shore so "only" 30 miles off the coast.  During the few hours I was out there, I wondered how the astronauts deal with the isolation-- unfathomable to me !!!!  My hat is off to them.

I like the challenges of bigger flights.  I like figuring out how to do it safely, then executing that plan and getting some pictures.
