Littlest Trike of them All video title "Air show time"

This is a Mosquito NRG powered harness with a single surface Wills Wing Falcon hang glider. Flown in very gusty conditions as a demo for an airshow. He demonstrated matching his airspeed to the wind speed and hovering (low with gusts-- not easy). Landing not so great, but I had one of these, and found that it landed like a 747, especially when I had two XC tanks of fuel. I flew it with a double surface advanced glider (Moyes Lightsport 149). They have an electric re-start option, and folding prop option (which this one has, but you can't see it in operation). The landing skids tuck up along side the harness in flight-- On the ground, they keep the propeller from touching the ground as it spins-- they actually do help the landing as they start to take the weight of the harness first, add rearward drag (kinda like trike wheels) and settle the hang glider into the wind- he did not raise his landing skids in this movie (too low, too gusty!) The idea is to power up to soaring height, then shut off the engine and soar- same as a self launching sailplane.

This was me launching my Mosquito / Moyes Lightsport at Oceano

(I love hearing Baxter's voice in the background-- be careful Dad!!)

    Run Forest Run!

Ah, very funny (short legged) Grasshopper!!   It remains to be seen if you fully comprehended the complexity of the task & the beauty of the well balanced wing throughout ...

This i think is my favorite launch video run. Anyone who has ever launched a hang glider has got to appreciate this run. Xc you can take my irish setters for a walk anytime.

hahahaha, you are right WE...! Good condition XC :))

Thanks guys !! This was actually at Oceano airport. The wind was cross and so I decided to run across the median, down the little dip then back up. That also helped in that I didn't have to "position and hold" blind to my backside on the runway before take off. What you really had to concentrate on was wings level, wings level-- I did a pretty good job ;) -- and the engine would shove you, which made it hard to balance, then EVENTUALLY you'd be sprinting, then moon walking (fun), then wishing to hell the thing had more power-- it's biggest downfall I think. Oh, by the way, the throttle you bit down on with your teeth during the run (spit it out if things went bad). In flight, you'd switch to a hand controlled cruise throttle.

Lemme see, now I have more than 5x the horsepower, but weigh up to 3x as much. Feels like I have tremendous HP now!! I guess nearly 2x the power to weight ratio.

I flew that Mosquito 100 miles once powering straight line like a trike can (instead of soaring) on only 2 gallons of gas (2 stroke). I am still really impressed with 50 miles per gallon !! My trike gets about 18mpg I think. A guy I knew who had a rigid wing (Atos I think) got nearly twice the mileage I did (if I remember right-- it was a heck of a lot better anyway). We flew them up over Hearst Castle once ;)

Here's another interesting thing-- being able to point the direction of the "fan" with your toes !!! You would weight shift like a normal HG pilot, pulling your bod into the corner of the basetube, but you could still angle your feet and thrust differently (inside the turn or outside). The bar position at "trim" with power on was nearly at your nipples (whereas at trim just flying the wing with no harness weight / power, ie normal HG) trim was about at your mid face-- you really had to just memorize bar feel (how many pounds of pull in were you giving- that was equivalent) rather than bar position. Past a certain bank angle it really wanted to wrap into the turn (spiral dive) especially under power- you had to "high-side" a lot-- maybe partially because all the extra weight was warping the wing more, and I guess your feet would tend to fall down inside the turn some which would accentuate the turn. There too, pulling in helped exit from the spiral.
