  • Ready to head out

Paul's trike warming up outside our hangar at Belen Alexander Airport, in New Mexico.  In the background is Ladron Peak.  This would be my most ambitious XC trip ever.  Our first day would be a long one, all the way to Marble Canyon Airstrip, with stops at Meteor Crater and the Lit...

  • Collapsed Lava Tube in the Malpais

We exited Cebolita Canyon and crossed of the Malpais Lava field.   This is definitely no place to land country.   I crossed with 3000 ft of altitude, but near the western edge of the lava field I spotted some interesting caves below.   I dropped down low for a few mi...

  • Cebolita Canyon

We crossed over to Cebolita Canyon, a long winding canyon through the pinion forests.  When we dropped down low, so did the temperatures.   Today was October 24, so I expected cool fall temperatures, but the temps at the bottom of canyon were down to 20F.

  • Salado Ruins Mesa

The first hour or two we were in familiar territory.  I wanted to check out a mesa with some indian ruins on top I saw earlier in the summer.   I had been back here one other time, but the air was too rough and windy to make a comfortable low pass to take a close look at the ruins....

  • Meteor Crater

We flew out to Winslow Arizona for our first stop of the day.   We refueled and scarfed down an sandwitch and headed out again.  A few miles to the west was Meteor Crater.  I circled over the crater which was a strong fun thermal generator now at 2pm.

  • El Morro

We continued west past El Morro National Monument and looked down on the partially exposed ruins of the indian village on top of the mesa.   At the base of El Morro is large permanent pool of water and a wall called "Inscription Rock" which has ornate carvings of early Spanish explorers...

  • Collapsed Lava Tube in the Malpais

Another view of the lave tube "bridge".   Supposedly, there is all sorts of lost outlaw treasure hidden in these nearly inaccessable tubes and caves out in the Malpais.   I never imagined these bridges existed.  I definitely want to come back and visit on foot some day.

  • Little Colorado

We turned north to pick up and follow the Little Colorado River for a while.   The canyon is very steeply walled and runs for a hundred of miles, like some sort of maze. I head heard there was a huge mud waterfall on the Little Colorado that flows during the spring runoff.  ...

A closer look at the small clear waterfall at the site of Chocolate Falls.
