Kamron and Leo

Leo getting ready to test fly the new 55hp Part103 Outlander

Comments

That trike is beautiful, what engine is that?

  • Leo

    Hey Riz,

    I think it was a HKS-700.

  • Ken

    No pretty sure its a - Hirth F-23 2 cycle 50hp

  • Leo

I think Ken is correct. After I read his comment I remember the trike sounding like a 2 stroke when Leo was flying around.

  • ULtrikepilot

Ken is correct.  This is the Hirth F23 which by the way weighs only 78lbs, including reduction unit, full exhaust, and electric start or 71lbs with recoil start reduction unit and full exhaust.  REC power lists it at 50hp not 55.  Even so this is likely the most powerful commercially available engine that would be suitable for a 103 trike.  One of my concerns with this engine is that it is only free air cooled and I wonder whether it has adequate heat dissipation especially for warmer temperature flying.  Given the extra drag of those huge balloon tires, I suspect that extra hp is quite welcome.  Wish I would have had a chance to take that outlander out for a spin. The HKS-700 is way too heavy for a part 103 trike.
