That is a very nice shot Garrett. What wing are you flying there?  That harness looks alot like mine.  Is it a WW Z5?

  • Garrett Speeter

Correct WWZ5. Mine doesn't fit right though (I bought it used) ordering a HES Pod next.

I had been wanting to fly daydreams for a long time. Reno pilots really helped me out with site intros and everything. Had a great time.

That wing is a Northwing Illusion 10M I leave in the lower 48 for traveling. Good wing for traveling from site to site flying new launches and LZ's. Added six new site on last trip.

Garrett   i understand you have a wasp. Iam getting very interested in going back into hang gliding. If you do have a wasp the things iam most curious about is powerthrust for a heavier pilot 200lbs.how much better does it perform from the missquito which seems underpowered to me.I use to have a bullet run off launch  but not sure my springs are good enough unless its blowing 25plus then theres landing on bad knees. Ive got a great hang gliding spot out here at tarkio with a great lz. I have flown my soaring trike there. But wouldnt mind hanging at tarkio with jeff shapiro. Weve also talked of getting a towing operation there. Any advise for an old worn out beat up fat hangie. I mean iam not dead yet but i do have some knee  running trouble.

Btw if in your travels you get this way will throw out the red carpet and you can fly tarkio.place to stay included.

Yes. I have a Wasp and have flown the mosquito NRG. Both are great products. As you may know the wasp comes in to models. The first (SP I think) has the radne engine that is the model I have and it climbs great for me and I never received training and have flown it for some years now and never had trouble getting launched despite the fact I do 99% of my launches in zero wind. The second wasp model is the "Venom" it has a vitorazzi engine that makes substantially more power.  The Swedish aerosport NRG only comes with the Radne.

I think the wasp is better for you for the following reasons.

    1. WASP is the only manufacture offering the more powerful vitorrazi engine. Thios will make you launches/climbs way easier.
    2. The wasp utilizes a foot throttle in cruise that allows you to keep both hands on the bar and manipulate the throttle like you are used to in your trike (once you get airborne of course).
    3. the wasp comes with a mouth throttle that actually kills the engine if you spit it out..not go to idle..it kills ignition. I like this feature.
    4. I found wasp more comfortable.

That said WASP is more expensive (to my klnowlege) and Swedish aerosport is more common, cheaper, and a very good piece of equipment. As is the Fillo…yes Fillo…they quoted me 4500 delivered for my friends Fillo and it features the Radne engine and also flies very well.

Now. For Towing. I operate a Payout winch to tow HG/PG in Alaska. It is a very smooth simple winch that I build for a grand total of 400$. Years later lots of tows followed and it proves very reliable. Platform launch is good for aging pilots because you simply sit prone in launch rack then launch then you can land on wheels if you want (because if you have a road/runway to drive rig you have a place to land on wheels). It is a sweet little set up I think may be worth looking into. I have some videos on my vimeo page that show glimpses of it and can help you with details.

Would love to fly your site! I travel a lot so you could see me there one day. Thanks for the offer and don’t hesitate to get in touch with more questions.

Gosh garrett what a flying vid. Had me gasping.truly truly makes you appreciate 103.  Thanks for the information on the wasp. It looks like the engine and prop are pulling you out of prone or is that an optical illussion? I had no idea their was this kind of flying going on in alaska.looks like you have an awesome group of flyers. Iam going to try and fly more of this winter here in montana if we have one? What are some good choices of wings for your wasp. Iam lookin in to it. What is the longest you can remain under power.  Thanks for your  advice.

Garrett, thanks for sharing the great video.  Quite a variety of flying displayed there.  Dave, here is the Wasp website.  Yes, I too find the Wasp option rather appealing.  If I were to pursue this the Venom would be my choice.  I did not realize that Vittorazzi was claiming 18hp out of a tiny 100cc engine.  That is incredible. 58kg or about 128 lbs of thrust.  That should be more than enough for a FLPHG for most pilots.  It even has fan based cooling and a gear box reduction. Wow.  It sounds ideally suited for a powered harness!

Wasp venom looks pretty good?  Thanks ul and garrett ive sent them an e mail for more info. Just out of curiosity what is the wasp governed by the ushga or 103. How much fuel can you leagally carry. And how much duration is possible under power.

  • Garrett Speeter

FLPHG is goverened by 103. You can get insuarance from USUA if you want that. You can legally carry 5 gallons but if you use two wasp tanks you only have 3...but that would last you almost 4 hours so I dont think it is necessary. Soon I will post a new vid from this season that shows more of the WASP and payout tow rig after complete re-design and total improvement.

Impressive 4hours thats xc territory thanks garrett
