The Mir diamond mine in Siberia is the deepest ‘proper’ man-made hole. It’s 525m deep and 1,200m across. There’s a no-fly zone above it because the downdraft created by the hole had caused several helicopters to crash.
Interesting Ed. I'm trying to figure out the sink thing-- I'm guessing they just mean there's a lot of turbulence associated with it. Thinking out lout here: Cold air sinks, it's typically cooler somewhat underground-- ok, makes sense, but way down deep they actually have problems because it is so hot. ...and if the air is sinking down in, it's got to fill it up at some point, can't just keep sinking in there forever. If all the air in the world sunk down in during the day, would it reverse flow at night and erupt lift? I'm guessing that there is definitely a temperature/heating differential-- dark sides of the hole, dusty white town. Air is going up and down maybe torroidal shaped flow? I dunno. VERY Interesting, something to be aware of. Cool post Ed!!

Ed... Lisa wants to know if you're planning on doing some flying over there in Siberia ? : )
Ominous.... I know that on the Nevada test site they have had similar problems with helicopters over the craters.
Wow @georgeb - looks like those planes could launch right into it. Funny place for a TFR
So that's a runway in the upper right corner of this picture. Interesting. "I'm going to Eat You!!"
@georgeb did you see this one?: http://alltrikes.com/elgg/pages/view/8129/im-going-to
I thought you'd like it because you flew similar planes! ;)
Funny @XCTriker ... Speaking of eating ... You're comment on YFT's photo was a riot: http://alltrikes.com/elgg/photos/image/8245/tanarg-snuggly-packed
Thanks guys. Hey George, let Lisa know I would be very happy just flying around here!!LOL
