Is it really landable #1 -- "Dry" lakebed? Jeffsflightlog.com

See @Jeff_Trike's spectacular trike XC adventure site for more.

Fear of doing this out in the middle of nowhere actually resulted in an "interesting" landing when I landed to give @Kim some of my gas one time.

    XC,

I'll bite.  What do you mean by "interesting"?

Well, it's a bit hard to judge distance and height from the air.  We were flying in an area technically very similar to Eastern Oregon desert (though legally very much distinct).  Kim was flying a Clipper so had 2 gallons less than me, and I was carrying a turtle pack with 5 extra.  Headwinds were cutting in to the margin of safety for fuel.  So we began looking at some lake beds to make a true precautionary landing--  all in the absolute middle of nowhere (otherwise we woulda done this at an airport).  But your photo kept sticking in my head.  How do I KNOW if it's solid?     Well, look for tracks, land where a path crosses it.   Ok ...  there was a path across the short axis of the lake bed (maybe I should call it a "pond bed") next to a cattle fence.  I crept lower and made a pass down the long axis.   ...  I think I can get it to a stop before the other side of the lake on/near the path on the short axis.  I then bring it around to downwind base final ... as I come up to the edge of the lake bed where the brush stops and bed begins, I see now it's a 2.5 foot drop from desert floor to lake bed.  Bit of adrenaline.  "That's going to increase my landing distance some", I think. (more than I thought).  I've got locked in to landing syndrome now though ...   I can do this, I thought.    But I came down nearly halfway across the lake bed (smoking in at high altitude) and power braked ...  but wasn't able to stop by the other side of the lake ....

I'm VERY impressed with the landing gear of the Tanarg.  It should've broken.  Vid showed it absorbing some serious punishment and excursion.  But, no damage at all, just very dusty.  Fine powdery soda dust all over !!!

Now, on ground Kim (@Flyingleap) can't hear me well.  I try to radio to go ahead and use the long axis, it's solid.  No dice.  I wave him off wildly from following my approach.  I give him the HG landing direction signal (body bent forward, with wings to rear, head pointed in direction)... no dice.  I try and scrape big dirt arrows in the dust for him ....  not working.   Eventually he does get it and lands the long axis.

Shared my extra gas and took off, but take off sure showed density altitude as well.

All this "Interesting-ness" because of your picture of not so dry lake beds  ;)
