Channel Island Trip

By XC Triker

Categories: Trike Talk, Cross Country / XC, Photography

I had been wanting to do this flight for a while.  I had flown to Catalina before, but in some ways this seemed more challenging--  very isolated, no public airstrips (1 dirt strip that says they will prosecute you for landing there), strong cold currents, great whites, blue whales--  and the tip of the 4th Island, San Miguel, is nearly 75 miles away from where we leave the main land.  Fuel, time and weather stability become big factors-- this time of year so does daylight.

I took some GoPro footage as well, but I'm still editing the Mt Whitney video-- almost done, really !!! ;)

Thanks Guys & Gals.  Next time Sally !! ;)   Jozinko, I guess this was a gift to myself (had wanted to do it)-- really wondering what you guys think of THIS INVENTION I made as a gift to all of AllTrikes.

To tell the truth, I was nervous.  I made a million calcs (glide, etc) and had tons of safety equipmt, but I felt pretty far away from "earth."  Listening to radio on drive up to Oakland, 45 years ago today US Astronauts first orbited the moon-- capturing the iconic Earth Rise photo.  (At least) One of the astronauts mentioned he silently hoped they would be able to hit that big blue marble on the way back--  THAT was real guts !

Awesome trip XC.   The feeling of exposure on a long trip like this is very nerve wracking and exhilarating at the same time.  You feel like you are so far out there that you will never make it back.  But you did it safely, and if something went wrong, you would be able to land on a beach somewhere, although you might loose your trike. The 2000 ft minimum altitude kept you with reach of a survivable landing area for the entire trip.

Thanks Jeff, I think you were much further away from civilization.  It's an interesting feeling being out there.  So, when I got halfway between the 2nd & 3rd of 3 islands , Flight Following said I was too far away to track on radar any more--  I was thinking, "So,  you won't know if I violate the altitude restrictions out here then, will you ...
