Pilot's Tip of the Week- Keeping your Medical

Many of you chose trikes because as a Light Sport Aircraft, a medical is not required.  However, there are many trike pilots with Private Pilot License  (For differences between Sport & Private Privileges click HERE)

Subscriber Question:

"The greatest fear among pilots is losing their medical certificate. How much truth should I tell on my medical? Many pilots with high blood pressure, controlled by medication, do not fully disclose this fact. This is something no one wants to talk about. Should I or should I not tell the truth on my medical? in our country we have some different flying licencies. Except a big planes we are flying for Experimental and Ultralight. For UL 3axies planes we must have the PPL. Other small aviation (hang gliders, powered hang gliders, para gliders and powered para gliders) cares for Flying Amateur Association of Slovak Republic. All powered pilots (one or two seats) have an obligation take part a medical check by special sport doctor every two years

Thanks for sharing a different country's approach.

In the U.S. we are required to "self certify" our health is in no way going to jeopardize our ability to fly, using the Sport Pilot initiatives as a standard. The exception is under FAR PART 103 which allows pilots to fly lighter single seat aircraft with less fuel without a license.

In this day and age, and what I have read about the medical evaluations I would be careful not to reveal any medical condition that would wash you out of flying.

If you have an illness or are on medications that will impair your judgement or physical abilities then you should not fly.

Recently I have heard of pilots getting their Medical's flagged if they have ever been knocked out (playing sports), or blacked out (too much to drink), and if they snore in their sleep. One person I know has been trying to get his 3rd Class Medical back (four years now) because his wife mentioned to a nurse (at the Airmen's Medical doctor's office) while he was in the bathroom, that he snored occasionally when he was dog tired.

This pilot has been inundated with requests to take a battery of sleep test to analyze if he has sleep apnea at his expense since this happened.

Grounds for a divorce...? No they are still together but he has not flown his four place airplane since.

The moral of this diatribe...don't fly if you are not safe. Don't reveal anything minor that will be checked on later as the system is now online and cross-checked by the feds.

Snoring cause for loss of medical!!!  If his wife had said, he stops breathing for several seconds while he sleeps that's one thing, but simple snoring!!??  Some offices are total pains in the ass, not on our side.  Don't make the mistake of seeing one of those offices first like I did.  Ask your pilot friends for recommendations of offices they would go to and go to those offices--  saving a buck, or a few minutes of driving can end up costing you thousands and months to years
