Cell phone and music connectivity onboard?

Last updated by Dave G Comments (5)

Has anyone besides Dean Coleman, ever used a system like this onboard their trike to get cell phone and music through their headsets?

This particular unit is manufactured for Pilot communications USA and retails for $260 us on their website. I cant speak for Dean other than to say he seems to be satisfied with it. He placed a call to me using it at about 3000 ft ASL and it was very clear communicating with him.

I have seen it for as low as $249 us on other sites.
You can connect up to two devices via bluetooth (wirelessly) like your cell phone and your ipod and recieve or make calls and play music through you headset.

They get good reviews mostly but I wonder what else is out there?
what better people to ask than my compadres on AllTrikes?

Very interesting Dave. I've tried using my cell while in flight and it just doesn't work. The Cell signal seems to only work within 500 feet agl.....after that, the signal is lost.

I'm not quite understanding how the unit above is accomplishing successful calls when all it's providing is Bluetooth. Mine was hardwired, and it seems the only difference between my set up and this unit was the connection type.

As for music....I've tried that also, but have found the aviation headsets to be too "Tinny" to enjoy music. The Base is almost nonexistent.

Would love to hear from someone who's tried this as well.

I have a lynx interface for my cell phone I listen to tunes and talk and receive phone calls in the air

Huh, that is an interesting device. Wouldn't it be specific to only certain internal communication systems? I fly a Comtronics and they are notoriously picky about working with outside systems. My cell towers seem to do fine up to about 1500ft and then start dropping out so I might benefit from one of these. I agree Leo, you'd still need cell service for this to be useful. Bluetooth is just going to let you keep your cell in your pocket.

You could well be right both Leo and Wile.
the field elev is about 1600 feet asl so that call was prob at about 1500 feet agl.
The website shows them being compatible with most types of headsets.only Dean could comment on how the tunes sound. I'm guessing that a set of Bose wouldn't hurt lol

sound is not that great davd clark headsets I have are not stereo.the reason I got this is because it cts out the misic or cell phone call for incoming radio transmission.if you just want music there is cheap ones that play misic and cell phone only.as for cell service it works every where I hve used it.dont forget it depends where the cell towers are in the mountains they are on top.more like mole hills around here our higest peak is silver star and it has a tower and weather radar at 6500 msl.as for sound quality its better than that coffee grinder behind you
