912 oil filters

Last updated by Ttabs Comments (7)

I'm ordering up a case of oil and some filters at Aircraft Spruce.  I went to see if they offer Rotax filters and instead they have these:

https://www.aircraftspruce.com/pages/ep/oilfilters_1rotax/tempestrotax.php

If you click the Q&A tab - you'll see the supplier states they will 'fit' the 912.  Does anyone have any info on these? (they have the same part # as the Rotax filters)

I'm contacting the manufacture on this but has anyone heard anything about these filters?

Never heard of those. Lockwood sent me the real thing when I ordered there.

I ordered my oil (AeroShell Sport PLUS 4 Aircraft Oil - 12-pack x 1 Litre Case) from SkyGeek but I got my filter and spark plugs from Lockwood (www.lockwood.aero).

Part# Product Quantity Price Ext. Price

    DCPR8E Spark plug for Rotax 912ULS 8 $2.95 $23.60

    825 012 Rotax Oil filter, Replaces 825 706, 3.4mm longer 1 $19.95 $19.95

Hi Ttabs, yeah, the new Rotax filter is Part# 825 012 (older style was 825 706   updated 5/24/11).  The new style is 3.4mm longer (I couldn't see what else was different about the new style but found this: "The overall length has increased about 3.5 mm ( .138″ ) due to the production process")  I thought there was a slightly different strength of bypass spring in them ???

So, the one on AC Spruce by Tempest for $22.90 has a magnet in it to pick up fine ferrous metal.  The Rotax @ $23.42 does not.  I tend to lean toward the genuine Rotax part though.

Hey Kael (@identifier ) what kind of price did you get on your case of Oil with shipping?  It's cost me $149 , OUCH !!!  (w S/H from LEAF)

That's weird, you show Lockwood filter price as $19.95,  and I see Lockwood's price as $23.40 ( http://www.lockwood.aero/p-64-rotax-oil-filter-replaces-825-706-34mm-longer.aspx )  --  Is this some kind of filter bubble?

My oil was $128.99 (for a case of 12) and shipping was $16.19 to NC.

I ordered both the oil and filter/plugs almost a year ago now so chances are the prices just went up with inflation.

Don't forget there is only one oil filter that you can use on the Rotax 912 engine, because it is  specifically designed for the pressure of that engine. It is a high pressure filter. As far as your spark plugs go, you must have heat paste on them.

  • XC Triker

Yeah, the heat sync paste is a bit pricey, rumor has it that Radioshack has equivalent heat paste, but I again went with the real stuff.  The paste is not antiseize as you would think, but really to transfer heat evenly between the head & plug--  the engineers say it's important, so I do it.

    Thanks Kael & YFT !

... so, yeah, I do screw around with some after market things (like the Racor fuel filter I love), but somethings I'm not clear on the risk/benefit to mess with- and always lean conservative / leave it stock / OEM.   Racor is a seriously well respected fuel filtration mega-player and highly likely to give better results than the $3 walnut sized screen filter (combined we have a few thousand hours on them now) ...   I know you've had questions / probs with your fuel system and concerns though ...     Anyway, if Tempest is a well respected Industry leader like Racor, with glowing user happiness and stats that prove they meet or exceed Rotax requirements, I'd seriously consider it.  Looking forward to your research.

Rotax 912 Oil Filter Gasket Cost $20,000

Link to good quick story HERE

I thought it was a good story on it's own, and need to do a full power run up to check for oil leaks.  Did not choose it because of the part about genuine Rotax parts.

I'm surprised the engine seized that quickly--  holy cow--  I thought it would go 3 minutes or so at full power, longer at medium.  Geez, one significant burp of your oil system and you better shut that pup down.

"About 20 seconds into the flight the engine warning light came on, and the engine stopped completely a few seconds later."

So, engine warning light comes on with low, but not zero oil pressure and he only goes a "few seconds" more before complete meltdown of the engine?
