This site is "Self Moderated":

We all know of potentially great sites where all the "normal" people left as the wolves fought it out.  Eventually virtually the only members left posting were the "wolves."

We all want a site that is friendly, open to new ideas, and fun to belong to.  "Moderating" a site so that it achieves that ideal is very difficult for any one person(s).  However, if all of us are able to chip in too the process of moderation, it is actually very easy as well as very fair.

How does/will Self Moderation work on this site?

First, we hope that everyone who comes here, reads "About This Site" and understands that it was created to be open and friendly.  However, if that doesn't work entirely, we are first going to rely on the "Thumbs Up" and "Thumbs Down" buttons to the right of each post.  If a particular member is being mildly uncool, then s/he may get one thumbs down (we would assume everyone takes the responsibility of giving a "Thumbs Down" to someone very seriously).  Thus, with one "Thumbs Down" the poster might consider coolinig it a little.  With two "Thumbs Down" then the poster should really consider what they are doing, etc.

If the "Thumbs UP" / "Thumbs Down" system alone does not seem to work, we are toying with the idea of putting some strength behind that.  If a poster gets FIVE (?) "Thumbs Down" for any particular post, then that poster will be not allowed to post to AllTrikes for 2 days.  This should work great as a cooling off period for any individual(s) openly fighting online (as opposed to a friendly disagreement on a controversial subject).  In such a situation, one (the more agressive / rude) or both posters can be given "Thumbs Down" by the other members.  An interesting side "strategy" then might be for the poster to SELF DELETE the offending post on the 3rd or 4th "Thumbs Down" before the 5th comes. ;)
