2nd Annual Fun fly-in in the "Outback" of Idaho!!

Camp right on the small grass runway.  Last year a great group of about 8 trikes showed up for 4 days of wilderness flying in the ruged, rural, high-density altitude of Idaho.

For a feel of what it's about watch THIS and This

Elk River is a great place to stay.

The camp area is just a large flat field about two acres in size right next to the runway.  No electric or amenities so you'll need to be self sufficient.  I have some nice quiet generators if you need them.  Tarps for shade will be very much appreciated.

Elk River is a very small and unique place.  Everything is a very short walk from your camp.  There is a general store with rooms available and a restaurant - kinda like the old wild west.  Hud and Connie (very friendly folks) are the owners and I'll talk to Hud about making sure we have a full supply of Premium Unleaded gas with no Ethanol.  That's what he stocks anyways.

Right across the street from your camp is the Log Inn - a tavern and restaurant.  Very rustic place.  I'll try to get some pics and send them out.  Your really going to enjoy Elk River.  Population is about 100 but it is a favorite destination for weekend campers and folks who want to get out into the backcountry on ATV's.   Elk River will grow on you.  BTW - the nearest big town is Moscow ID- pop 23000 - about an hours drive to the west and Spokane is 2.5 hrs north.

I imagine the flight schedule will be primarily early morning departures and evening flights.  You'll be able to spend as much time in the sky as you'd like (weather permitting) and I've got an awful lot of destinations and things to go visit. The flying is as diverse as my vids suggest.  And - if you want to really put some miles on - have at it!  I expect temps to be somewhere in the upper 80's or 90's.  I'm usually moving around 5 am for morning flights - get back 10 or 11 ish. However - dew will likely saturate wings so perhaps departures will be more like 7 or 8 ish after things dry out a bit.  You'll want to cover your cockpits if possible.   I personally have no reservations about leaving my trike unattended on the flight line in this town - for what it worth.   Evenings start around 4 or 5 ish and I'll stay up till dusk which is around 8.  I'd like to host some barbecues at my place and am thinking mid day will be our best chance while we relax in the shade.

(Ttabs asked me to post this for him-  when he gets back, I'm sure he'll add more info)

Hi Dave Coy....Man this board has a few Daves huh?..... we should start a thread and call it Daves corner.....whadya think xc triker?

I'm a baby flyer....got 3hrs of dual under my belt

Im sure if the weather were to cooperate I would get more flying done.

I'm a bit like a 5 year old right now full of questions and wonderment at my newfound love.
I think that Barb and I will jump on the motorcycle and make the trip down to meet everyone that shows up.......and make them mental with my questions and drooling on their machines lol

I'd love to meet you if we make it down there.

  • white eagle

Yes Dave we are abundant.Iam the good looking one :-) hey elk river Is just awesome time with type a persona.hope to meet you there that would be great.

  • XC Triker

What do all of you think?!!  Speak now, or don't complain (lurkers :).   There's a suggestion to move Elk River to better coincide with the Arlington Fly-In (so that those of us driving thousand + miles up) could go to both.  To do that, the Elk River event and everything associated would be moved 1 wk earlier-- So instead of the ER get together on July 31-Aug 3rd / 4th, it would be on July 24 to July 27th /28th .  (In each case on Sunday, Ttabs thought that most people would be packing up and heading home (so half day))

What works best for the majority of people?

  • white eagle

David tom it will be harder for us to change dates as we have already put in our 30 day paid time off requests.also my buddy John and Kristel have already set there intinerery for er.there driving all the way from Phoenix.Dave I just heard you are planning er maybe you could hook up something with dan Beattie in Alberta I think he was thinking of coming that would be great if you both could make it.

  • XC Triker

Thanks for chiming in David.  I'm hoping to see if Henry is interested in Arlington, but can see that maybe that's a pipe dream.

David Coy---  Here's a Site Tip:  It looks like you're hoping Dan Beattie and Dave will see your post above and get together for the trip to Elk River.  Why rely on chance that they'll see the post?

If you want to alert someone to a post your making, you can use this trick  Dan Beattie is  " @dbeattie "  You can check that by clicking on the lower right portion of their avatar and seeing what's listed as their @name.  Dave's is @djg56 .  By putting in their @name, they'll be notified of a post mentioning them.  The "owner of the post" (in this case XC Triker, who started this page 179 days ago, will also be notified).  Everyone else, just has to come across the post by chance.  It would be cool if their @name was the same as their visible name, but it all depends on what they entered when they signed up.  Your visible name is david coy, your @name is @wambleska (because that's what you chose).  You can edit your @name by going to "Settings" in white at the upper upper right.

  • Dave G

    @dbeattie

    @wambleska

thanks for the tip Admin.....im trying it out now.

    David C and Dan

If the dates remain the original dates then Barb and I will jump on the bike and leave Kelowna, B.C. on the thurs and be ER on Friday, stay Friday and Sat night at the general store/Hotel and leave on Sunday.

We hope to meet lots of you there and perhaps Barb will get to go up with one of the seasoned pilots there (shes never been up before)

We are thinking of leaving Kelowna on the Thurs morning and ride for about 4 or 5 hours and spend the night somewhere around the outskirts of Spokane.....then go the last little bit on Friday morning to ER.

    Dave G.

  • Dan Beattie

Hey folks wish we could make it this year but it won't happen. We are planning our semi retirement. Going to sell the house, buy a diesel pusher and go full time RV'ing. We plan to pull an enclosed trailer for the car and the trike to travel with us were ever we go. I think we will spend next spring with friends in Salmon Arm B.C. so we won't be to far away from you Dave G. Hopefully we can hook up. As far as Elk River for next year. Absolutely :)

  • XC Triker

Hey Dave,  You're right, the dates July 31 to Aug 3rd are not Thurs (1st) to Sun (4th) as written.  I posted this event for Ttabs who is actually organizing it, and now I can't remember which he said 31st-3rd, or Thurs to Sun.  I think he said 31st to 3rd (wed to sat) and that Sunday (4th) he expected people to want to be packing up and driving home.  Let's see what @Ttabs says.  I'm actually planning on getting there by Wed the 31st.

@dbeattie, sad to hear you can't make ER this year, looking forward to seeing you soon anyway

@HenryIMGW  are you interested in Arlington (or even Oregon Rally)?  Or just stick around local for Lompoc Cub Fly-In?

From Dave  @djg56 I hope that I am posting this in the right area f.or you to see it.
I was just checking out the travel dates for ER and found that the dates posted don't jive with the days posted.July 31 is a Wed.....I'm going to assume that it is held on Thurs the 1st thru Sun the 4th

  • white eagle

I don't know were planning on being there on the 31.but if it's as friendly and fun as last year Sonya and I might decide to stay there indefinitely.just kidding Kathy! :-) hey how about a things to chip in list tom.last year you went all out Sonya and I can pitch in say food or drinks

  • Ttabs

Update from Elk River the weekend of July 13th.  The PortaPotty's await your arrival!

  • XC Triker

Oh man, for a second I thought you changed the dates- you're just saying you were up at Elk River this weekend that just passed.    Hey, I will have an extra bed or two in my RV if anyone needs it.

  • XC Triker

Note RE Elk River Flying WILL still be happening, but we may need to change the venue.

Elk River strip may be closed currently.  Henry drove all the way out there today to drop off his RV, set up his trike then fly-out to join up with us for some Pre-Elk river deep back country flying (Tom, George and I are in Spokane- I got set up today).  There is very limited communication in and out of Elk River-- mostly just getting phone calls through the general store.  Henry left a message at 5pm that when he got there, there was a big fire-fighting helicopter sitting on the field and they told him the field was closed (not a TFR, not too near the fires, but being used for firefighting helicopters).  Now he can't park/stage his RV there and can't set up to fly out to meet us.  We tried to call back this evening but unable so far.  Anyway, we checked for NOTAMs RE closure and there were none.  I asked WX Brief if that was typical that an airport would be closed without a NOTAM, he said he could not advise!! :(  WTF.  Kind of a bitch if we're out in the deep back country, running low on fuel and coming in on an airport that is unofficially closed by word of mouth!!!!  He could not advise!  Just adds to our pre-ER adventures!!!

Anyway, there are many many nearby great places to fly and camp (for example Priest Lake) for all of us and we will figure this all out.  David Coy thought we could all stay at his friend Bill's runway, and that the nearby fire is near containment.  The actual Elk River event is not scheduled for another week still.

    Tom will keep you posted

  • XC Triker

Henry just got an email out via the Store's Wi-Fi :

These guys are from the contractor hired by the federal agency.
They have no idea when the agency release the airport.
Could be tomorrow or could be up to next week.

I just set up my trike for stand by.
If the guy from agency approves, I might be able to take off.
As far as they use the airport, they put the temporary big X mark
on the runway, no landing allowed. So I [may have] ... only one chance to
    take off.

    Henry

    I replied:

    Hi Henry,

We checked online and with WX Brief, there is no NOTAM of closure.  There are no NOTAMs RE Elk River at all !!--  so, it doesn't appear really within legal methods that they have put an "X" out--  that is unsafe for pilots flying in, depending on that airport being available and having no way to know about it.

We assumed that you would likely just drive out of there and come to Spokane--  if you do get out on your one chance, IF they allow you too, how will you or anyone be able to fly in and get your RV?

Tom is trying to call you via the General Store.  We'll try again when they open in the morning.

    David

  • Dave G

I hope that the situation has cleared by July 31st.

Barb and I have booked in at the General store for two nights so that we could meet everyone that is going to ER.

That would suck if everyone had to change the venue. (Just sayin......pout pout whine whine)

  • Freebird

HOWDY GUYS say if you cant fly at ELK RIVER Then your welcome to have the fly in here outta Eagles Nest here on the WA, ID & Or boarders. Lots of remote XC flights outta here into remote wilderness areas . Eagle cap wilderness area. Hells canyon & salmon river wilderness areas . ID MTS  , OR MTS & WA MTS. YA can all camp free  & fly outta here if ya want to. Just wanted to send out the invite in case the  chopper crews don't leave Elk City in time.

  • white eagle

Thanks freebird they got the message.I know you and tom would have a blast.that's a great place to fly down there.the river of no end and hells canyon! That ought to keep them entertained :-)

  • XC Triker

Hey Freebird, thank you!!!!  If we can't go to Eagle's Nest this year, then next year instead!!!  David Coy sas your place is sweet! Maybe a split adventure, half time at Eagle's, then part at Bill & Dan's!

Update,  Henry flew out of ER this am, just flying locally.  No prob with firefighters this am.  He plans on flying out of ER tonight or tomorrow to join us in Spokane (leaving his RV at ER-- so he's committing to ER) on the PRE-elk River deep back country adventure.  Here's the SkyVector map for our potential route (all up in the air for weather and TFR's I count ELEVEN TFRs in the vicinity for fires) until we meet up with you next Wednesday for the Elk River flying or wherever we are--  at the moment Elk River looks like it will happen, if not, we will be close by so meet us there.

Dave G-  don't sweat your hotel reservation at ER too much.  First of all ER is likely to go on as planned.  Second, call the hotel today and give them a heads up-- that way you can say you gave them advance notice (a week), and it's not your fault if their town closes their airport.  Third, the town knows Ttabs (Tom) well, and they'll treat you right- just mention you're coming in to visit Tom and his group.  Fourth, if all else fails and they charge you something, we'll all chip in and cover it for you so you're not out--  so don't skip on coming! ;)

See you there--  obviously, we will only be in intermittent touch during the next week.  David Coy is keeping tabs on us and will update as best he can-- but as with any flying, you don't know 'till you know, and that's what's making this all an adventure!!!

Freebird, thanks again for the offer!!!  Looking forward to seeing you there (whether there is here or there ;).  Ttabs is excited to see you.

    This just in from Henry:

GOOD NEWS !! Today, fire helicopter didn't appear here at all. They remove the X mark from the runway too. So, I think the airport is officially open.  The air is much stable than the last week.
I think it will be much less chance for new fires.

The runway condition is better than last summer. The parking area is cleaner too.
    Much less goose poop !!

    Henry

David Coy also said the fire in Superior, N/E of Elk river is basically under control.  So things are looking much better today than yesterday ! ;)   All part of the adventure-- figuring out how to make it happen

  • Dave G

XC Thats exceptional news, Im not going to worry about it anymore.

Henry, thank you for transmitting your findings from ER to the group.

I hope you guys have fun with the pre ER adventure and we will see you all soon.

    Dave. G
