So, I still don't know the real deal- is the runway iffy with rocks and whoop-ti-doos that are 4 feet high as some have said? Or is it a nice dirt rwy with few to no rocks in excellent condition and perfectly good as others have said?
I haven't flown out there yet (even though it's close), because I was concerned I might find the former rather than the latter ; )
I thought you stopped there on the way back from Havasu?
Negative, we stopped at "Flying J" / El Mirage-- just a few miles North of Brian Ranch. Didn't over fly or land at BR.
Ah, I didn't realize there was a difference
I used to fly out of Brian Ranch several years ago. The runway is landable, though there are rocks that can on occasion ding your prop. You will kick up a rock or two on landing, I had to put a rock net on my airborne. It is very dusty out there, so will require a good dusting off after your return. They plow the landing strip from time to time and that helps even out the bumps and bury or move the rocks, but if they haven't done that in awhile, it can be iffy.
I did eventually move from there as the dust and rocks really made it less than desirable. That said, I would still land there for an event, i just would not make a habit out of it.
Hope that helps.
Hey Peter, thanks that really helps explain the conditions and variability reported. I would guess that before an event they would manicure the runway so it was in it's best condition then.
I think my wife is leaving me on the weekend of the 25th for a pretty blonde girl I flew in my trike last weekend -- I'm not sure if that means I'm free to do whatever I want, or that I may fly up near King City that weekend where they will be rock climbing, or I have to stay near home and puppy-sit. So, sounds like we will all be kind of playing it by ear that weekend as to whether we can go ...
